MomsRising AD thanking Senator Casey for voting against SJ 37
Bernie Sanders to Sen. Inhofe "STOP POISONING OUR CHILDREN"
MomsRising, a grassroots organization that tackles many important issues facing our country today from health care, workplace rights, environmental issues and more has made a six figure ad buy in the Scranton/Wilkes Barre media markets to thank Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) for voting against Senator Inhofe's (R-OK) attempt to derail new standards set by the EPA in February 2012 to limit mercury, acid gas, and toxic metals that power plants expel into the air we breathe.
Senator Inhofe, claimed in an article for CNN that his resolution SJ 37 would "prevent the Obama EPA from inflicting so much economic pain on American families" and going even further by claiming that this regulation is "the centerpiece of President Obama's war on coal." (http://www.cnn.com/...). What Senator Inhofe failed to state was the EPA estimates show a 3-1 benefit to cost ratio, could create 8,000 jobs and as many as 30,000 in the electricity sector, protect the waterways we fish in and reduce premature fatalities from the emissions these plants release into our air, as the chart below shows. (http://www.gpo.gov/...)
Estimated Reductions in Incidence of PM2.5-Related Health Effects in 2016
In defense of Senator Inhofe, he is representing a vital interest of his; the over two million dollars in campaign contributions from energy and natural resource companies. His resolution was bought and paid for, however Senator Casey, forty five of his fellow Democrats and five Republicans stood up for the interest of their constituents and the air they breathe.
Tom Smith, the Republican challenger for Senator Casey's seat and a Coal Mining Executive wasted no time criticizing this vote. "The resolution fell by a vote of 46-53. SJR37 was introduced by Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) to prevent the Obama EPA from the threat of another job-killing regulation that would lead to higher energy costs on hardworking American families" (http://tomsmithforsenate.com/...)
I don't believe this is a war on coal, this is a struggle to protect something that Coal executives like Tom Smith regard as a resource and Bob Casey sees as an asset. If those on The Right want to hide behind their policies of Workforce dismantling to keep their profits up because they don't wont to accept their civic responsibility to pay for the maintenance costs to protect the air we breathe then the only response is to vote for those who will stand up to this irresponsible business model. Thank you Bob Casey for standing up to those who would profit off our misery.
