Gov. Paul LePage was in Vermont this morning for a fundraiser for Randy Brock, who is running for governor of the Green Mountain State. LePage spent more than five minutes with Paul Heintz, a reporter with Seven Days, an independent media outlet based in Burlington.
During the interview, LePage was asked about how he compared the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to the Gestapo in his weekly radio address. The full interview can be heard below.
LePage again offered a non-apology for his
LePage:What I'm trying to say is that the Holocaust was a horrific crime against humanity and frankly, I would never want to see that repeated. Maybe the IRS is not quite as bad, yet.
Heintz: But they're heading in that direction?
LePage: They're heading in that direction, yeah. The Supreme Court decision robbed an awful lot of freedom cuz now we are gonna be told what we have to do. Never in the history of this country have we been told that we have to do something, particularly to buy something from a commercial market.
Heintz: So you're saying that the IRS is heading in the direction of the Gestapo actually did in World War II?
LePage: Yeah - they killed a lot of people.
Heintz: And so the IRS is heading in the direction--
LePage: Yeah--
Heintz: They're heading in the direction of killing a lot of people?
LePage: Yeah.
Heintz: Are you serious?
LePage: Yeah. Very serious. You know why? Rationing. They ration health care in Canada - that's why a lot of people from Canada come down to the US.
