Welcome, friends. The purpose of this regular series is to promote enthusiasm and action among Daily Kos members. Romney will likely out-fundraise President Obama. However, we believe that we can still win if (1) we can remain competitive financially, and (2) we volunteer our time and energy (GOTV, canvassing, phonebanking, LTE, ...).

Michelle Obama & Latina Moms
One demographic that President Obama's campaign is hoping to inspire to GOTV this year is Latina voters. On July 10th, Michelle Obama participated in a mother-to-mother chat that was sponsored by Mamiverse and livestreamed nationwide. For almost a half hour, the First Lady chatted with Latina moms about what's at stake for Latina mothers and their families in this presidential election:
In her opinion piece at cnn.com, Maria Cordona, who moderated the Mamiverse discussion, reiterated many of the same points yesterday:
[T]he Obama campaign is doing a much more aggressive job of reminding Latino voters what this president has done to help Latino children and families get ahead:
-- Health care reform gives 9 million Latinos and millions of Hispanic children with pre-existing conditions life-saving coverage.
-- The Recovery Act has kept 1.9 million Latinos out of poverty, and the president's actions to create 4.5 million jobs include millions of new jobs for Latinos.
-- Obama has passed 18 tax cuts for small businesses that benefit hundreds of thousands Latino entrepreneurs.
-- Obama's support for Pell Grants gives 150,000 additional Hispanic students the chance to go to college.
-- A $5 billion investment in the Head Start program benefits hundreds of thousands of Latino children who are more than one-third of Head Start participants.
-- Extensions of the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit and unemployment benefits help 5.4 million Latino families, including 11.3 million Latino children and nearly 1 million Hispanics who didn't lose their unemployment benefits.
-- And facing the "party of 'no'" on immigration, Obama has given temporary relief to almost 1 million "dreamers" -- undocumented kids who came here through no fault of their own and know no other country to call their own. They will be able to study or join the military without the threat of deportation.
Latina/Latino Voters: "It Takes One"
On Thursday, Obama for America continued its effort to reach out to Latina/Latino voters, releasing a version of Michelle Obama's "It Takes One" ad with Spanish subtitles:
In "It Takes One," the First Lady reminds each of us of the importance of getting out every vote:
"That one new voter you register in your precinct. That one neighbor you help get to the polls on November 6th. That could make all the difference. That one conversation you have. That one volunteer you recruit. That could be the difference between waking up on November 7th and feeling the promise of four more years or asking yourself, 'could I have done more?'"
"As Barack has said all along, 'It takes one voice to change a room. And one room to change a community. And one community to change the direction of our nation'. It takes one and it starts with you."
Pa'lante! (Forward!)
Continuing their effort to reach out to Latina voters, OFA also released two ads yesterday featuring a popular Cuban-American journalist and talk-show host,
Cristina Saralegui, who has been dubbed the "Hispanic Oprah" for her two-decade stint hosting the Miami-based Spanish-language talk show "El Show de Cristina (The Cristina Show)" on
Univisión (1989-2010), and later the weekly variety show "Pa'lante con Cristina (Forward with Cristina)" on
Telemundo (2011-2012). She currently hosts a talk show on her Sirius XM Radio channel,
Cristina Radio.
For the first time, Saralegui endorsed a presidential candidate in June because she believes President Obama "understands the Hispanic community and has supported it unconditionally":
“It wasn’t until this election, and because of what I see in President Obama and know he’s accomplished, that I decided to get involved,” she said. “President Obama is a principled man who has worked hard to put healthcare and a good education in the reach of millions of Americans and believes that everyone who works hard and plays by the rules, should have a fair shot at the American dream.”

In these two OFA ads, which are slated to run in Colorado, Florida, Nevada, Ohio and Virginia,
Saralegui highlights the president's record with respect to education and the economy, a record that includes the President's actions to restart employment growth after inheriting an economy losing 750,000 jobs a month when he became president. The president took action to prevent 2 million Latinos falling into poverty during the worst recession of our generation, to help 150,000 additional Hispanic students to pay for college, to ensure that interest rates on student loans are maintained as low as possible, and to prevent the collapse of the U.S. auto industry.
The second ad, "Cristina Saralegui: La Economía," can be viewed here.
