Even though I've been here for many years, this is my first diary.  My apologies if I'm screwing it up, or if the format is wrong.

What finally compelled me to write?  The evil monsters at Westboro Baptist Church are planning on protesting a military funeral in Rancho Cucamonga, California, later this morning (Thursday, August 2nd) morning.

Here is the link to their hateful screed:

http://www.godhatesfags.com/...

I will be honest: I did not know the soldier whom this funeral is for.  He was a friend of a friend, but I have no connection to him, or his family, other than the fact that we are humans, and hopefully good people, which is more than I can say for the WBC protestors.

His family and friends are trying to organize a "human wall" to shield him from these hate-mongers.  I promised that I would use what influence I have, if any, to help.  If anyone is able to help out with this cause on incredibly short notice, it would be genuinely appreciated.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Good on you mate (7+ / 0-)

Google your state local or county FreeThinker group - there will be one - and get in touch with them. They will be more than happy to help you raise awareness.

Also get in touch with your local newspapers and get them to run an alert article. That will get bodies out on the street as well.

Finally there are some Bikers who regularly turn up to wall these rats in with bodies and flag lines. Think they are called the Freedom Riders. See if they are aware of this.

Good luck mate, keep your cool, wall em in and turn your backs on them.

    At Them!!!!!!

Have the family contact The Patriot Guard Riders.  Here is their Mission Statement:

The Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse amalgamation of riders from across the nation. We have one thing in common besides motorcycles. We have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security. If you share this respect, please join us.

We don’t care what you ride or if you ride, what your political views are, or whether you’re a hawk or a dove. It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you’re from or what your income is; you don’t even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect.

Our main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives:

Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.
Shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors.

We accomplish the latter through strictly legal and non-violent means.

To those of you who are currently serving and fighting for the freedoms of others, at home and abroad, please know that we are backing you.  We honor and support you with every mission we carry out, and we are praying for a safe return home for all.

Share this with the family and start a Facebook campaign right away letting everyone know that WBC plans on protesting.

There have been many times when WBC backs down and does not attend because of the overwhelming community support that was spurred by a Facebook campaign.

Good Luck and may he Rest in Peace.

Several years ago, a former student of the parochial school where I taught was killed in Iraq.  There were some rumblings that the WBC might show up and the Guards were there in force.

Since all 300 of our current students were forming an honor guard in the driveway, and students from a nearby public school were also expected to attend, we all breathed a little bit easier when those motorcycles rolled in.  We knew they'd do their best to shield the kids and family from anything nasty.  Fortunately, no haters showed up, but I've had a deep respect for the Guards ever since.

    You're fine.

These assholes are best ignored when possible, but it isn't always possible.

Just remember that they fund their shit by suing people who counter them. Don't give them any basis for that. Passive, passive. Human wall is good.

Good luck. A little googling showed me the Patriot Guard Riders are on board too.

provoke a violent, angry response. Everybody who takes part in human shield should sign a sheet promising their silence and their non-aggression.

Silence frustrates the cult.  And it is an appropriate response at a funeral.

When Westboro has picketed schools and organizations, counter-demonstrators have used humor with good results. But, of course, a funeral is no place for that.

A lot of silent people staring them down should be sufficient to discourage them and shorten their time in your town.

Best wishes to the family and to you and all who participate in helping ease this situation.

  •  Isn't there a hospital for the crminally insane (0+ / 0-)

Or something like that, in Cucamonga?

I seem to vaguely recall although I haven't lived in Southern Cal for many long decades.

If so, it would be a perfect place for the Phelps cult, although I'd feel sorry for the other criminal lunatics there.
