The political scatology which is Mitt Romney's willful and racist lie that President Obama wants to end welfare reform, and give free money to all those lazy black and brown human parasites that want to live off of white people, has attracted some flies.

The media spins its wheels, debating the role of racial "dog whistle" politics by Republicans in their hostility and opposition to the country's first black president--as opposed to calling out Mitt Romney for the racist liar that he has proven himself to be.

The central element of dog whistle politics is that the cues are so subtle and coded that only the target audience will pick up on a given speaker's real intent. Ostensibly, these secret codes and signals give a politician plausible deniability, where in Romney's case (and the Republican Party in mass) racism can be denied, and then the assertion flipped in a game of political Aikido that plays on white victimology and spurious claims of "reverse racism."

In theory, those candidates that deploy racial dog whistles can win on both ends of the deal: they get to communicate their onerous message; this same candidate then mines white racial resentment for electoral gain when they are critiqued for their racism.

Romney and his defenders will continue to deny the obvious racial invective in the "Barack Obama is a Welfare King" ad. However, there is one group of people who hear Romney's racial appeals crystal clear and in stereo.

As I discussed in this post, I do a daily survey of some of the more prominent (and public) white supremacists websites. The views expressed in the white nationalist online community are the racial id of contemporary populist conservatism in the Age of Obama. As such, these spaces are a telling barometer for the backstage and frontstage racism of the New Right and the Tea Party GOP.

Here is a featured essay on Mitt Romney's candidacy and his welfare queen meme from one of the more "respectable" White Nationalist Neo-Confederate websites (I will not directly link to it, but you can do a simple online search to confirm these quotes):

Mitt Romney was in a Chicago suburb today speaking to White voters blasting the Obama campaign for dismantling welfare reform...

So Mitt Romney is speaking to our people, promoting popular issues with subtle and not so subtle racial themes.

Again, I note that Mitt Romney is a racial “pussy-footer” – very similar to George HW Bush Sr (US President 1988-92). Pussy-footers are the most common American racial renegades. Pussy-footers look and act White.

They marry White, they don’t have any real hatred towards our/their White American people. But, they rarely if ever defend our people and in live or die racial conflicts, racially charged political campaigns they pussy-foot around; they try to pretend that there aren’t any racial conflicts and any racial problems are some misunderstanding. Pussy-footers like to be liked and they tend to agree with whoever is in the room with them.

So today, please pass the word on to all of your contacts that you approve of the Romney campaign’s new direction:

Targeting our people, our voters – “hunting where the ducks are”. The Romney campaign is no longer pandering to NW voters who will never vote for White Republicans. Instead, the Romney campaign is connecting with the voters he/we need to win and the Romney campaign is standing up for the legitimate rights of our people.

There is no super conspiracy controlling the Romney campaign. Mitt Romney doesn’t hate our people. He doesn’t want to destroy the Whites in the South. He’s not trying to bring back Black Reconstruction or incite Blacks to riot and murder in you town.

There is no reason to hate Mitt Romney because he is rich, was the governor of a Northeastern state or hate all the beautiful White people associated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mitt Romney is a solid White guy with a large, very beautiful White family.

But he is a…..Pussy-footer. Please understand the situation and act accordingly.

White supremacists clearly understand Mitt Romney's evolving campaign strategy, his appeal for a not insignificant part of the white voting public, and how Red State America--fearful of the country's changing demographics and submerged in the Right-wing echo chamber--could see him as protection from "oppression" by black and brown folks and the country's first black president.

Mitt Romney's race baiting is a dangerous political game. Romney's use of white identity politics pays dividends in that it helps him look like a "legitimate" and "real" Conservative to the Tea Party base. Mitt Romney's lying and racism will also attract an element of the Right that could become more of a liability than an asset.

At this moment in the 2012 campaign, Mitt Romney is Mickey Mouse in Fantasia, playing with elements that he can not fully control. He best be careful or the politics of hate could blow up in his face.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I don't think so. And I don't think these are really "dog whistles." To me they sound like shouts in surround sound. They are all too audible.

And what would be wrong with cutting the work requirement (if that was part of what's going on, and isn't)? Nothing. In this economy there aren't enough jobs.  So the make-work work requirement is there for one and only one purpose: shaming and humiliation for receipt of benefits.

It makes no sense when the unemployment level is where it is to require people to seek work and/or train for jobs. The real argument here is precisely the one you so clearly hear: don't help black and brown people or even poor whites in legitimate need (most recipients are children). No. Shame and humiliate them, induce them not to accept what is statutorily theirs. That, Mitt Rmoney and the racists agree, should be the cost of needed benefits.

    For shame.

The "gentlemen" on the well-regarded (?) supremacist blog had the right of it, though.  Romney is a pussy-foot, (although not nearly as attractive as that appellation sounds).

He is a racist.  But he's an incidental racist.  Most likely he doesn't go to his 600-thread-count-sheeted bed every night and think "I've got to get rid of that n---r in the White House."  He has probably never said anything deliberately insulting about the First Lady.  That just isn't the way he rolls.

He is, if you will, an Equal Opportunity Racist.  He doesn't hate - that takes too much energy - he feels disdain towards anyone who isn't (1)White (2)Rich (3)Mormon and/or (4) anyone who can't be used by him to achieve his dream of ultimate power.  That is his passion.

Hate is passionate.  Hate can be used to destroy or turned into love.

You can do nothing with the vacuousness of disdain.

Romney hasn't enough character to be truly evil.  He is simply  . . . empty.

      •  I honestly think (0+ / 0-)

that Willard thinks that I am as subhuman as he thinks any brown-skinned person is, by virtue of my not having been born into wealth. It's a prerequisite. And of course, because women are by nature his moral and intellectual inferior.

I wonder, though, what he thinks of Herman Cain.

      •  My ears hurt, the dogwhistling is so loud! (0+ / 0-)

An excellent post. I differ a bit on just how subtle a dog whistle is. I have dog whistles and I can always hear them, just not as acutely as my Shepherd. He's got big ears for dog whistles and I've got huge ears for racist dog whistles.

I'm a (white) native of the Deep South, Alabama, 68 and a few months to 69, I was up to my ears in civil rights in three states. Connecticut resident for 25 years, more or less, second home in Virginia where I lived in between. I grew up in the segregated South.

People have the illusion that what we're hearing is softer and harder to hear than the talk of, let's say George Wallace or Lester Maddox. I knew both of them, but much more Wallace who is the archtype of modern Republican politics. Also the reason I don't register as a Democrat although I am one. Wallace never used "Nigger" in his public speeches and never failed to use in personal conversation.

Historian Dan T. Carter, who is one of the most important historians of that period, described at length the development of the "soft porn of racism."  It was part of what he called "The politics of Rage."

That "Soft porn of racism" was a manner of political speech developed by   George Wallace and imitated and developed further by ostensible historian Newt Gingrich. You talked about pointy headed bureaucrats, forced busing, quotas, welfare queens, the criminal class, the bell curve theorists, dependency, etc.   And States Rights, the goal of the Confederates and Segregationists.

Television soft porn isn't really all that soft, it just leaves out a few almost minuscule details. But we do know what they're doing.

I think Romney is a thoroughly bad man for two reasons or more. One is what we know he did at Bain and on taxes and his complete failure to appreciate why some of us feel the way we do.

The other is that he has stepped right into the Newt Gingrich racist shoes. What bothers me is that he may think he's dog whistling quietly. I don't think it's possible that he doesn't know he's playing a racist game, e.g. the deliberate affront to the NAACP.

In some ways I'd rather believe he's doing it deliberately. Unfortunately, I believe he's doing part of it deliberately but without a full appreciation of just how foul his speech is.

I'm attuned to this and always have been. I'm proud of the progress we've made, African-Americans and the rest, but dammit there's a long way to go.

I hear things that for some reason stick out at me in the same way they strike millions of others. They will know it's racist, but call it something else and the person speaking it a straight shooter. What it boils down to is an attempt to stir up the racial pot.

Wallace did not use the word "Nigger" in his public speaking. I can't remember him not using it in private conversation and my experience was not unique.

FWIW, we'd be seeing a very high level of this even if Obama was not president. With him as president, you look at the remarks about college grades, intelligence, teleprompters, etc. It's all blatant racism. It is not cloaked. It isn't subtle.

The South always rewarded politicians who could defend "Our sacred way of life" and "our traditions"and softly explain why anti-lynch laws were evil and violated state's rights. There were plenty of bullies who broke that code but in the end the South has played a long game.

What we're looking at now is the extreme wing of the DixieCan party, or as I prefer, the Repucommunist Party, the largest and most dangerous group of anti-American subversives the nation has yet encountered.

So none of us have to.

I definitely agree with your analysis of dog whistles. This guy wants to be president so bad, he'll say or do anything, if he thinks it will help. He's probably smart enough to understand how dangerous this is, but I'm sure his ambition and immodesty are blinding him.

And don't forget Willard's religious background. Until 1978, blacks were officially excluded from the Mormon "priesthood". Here's a quote from the book of Mormon:

And [God] had caused the cursing to come upon them, yea, even a sore cursing, because of their iniquity. For behold, they had hardened their hearts against him, that they had become like unto a flint; wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people, the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them. And thus saith the Lord God; I will cause that they shall be loathsome unto thy people, save they shall repent of their iniquities." (2 Nephi 5:21)
I don't have a good feel for the contemporary state of race relations in the Mormon church, but Mittens grew up in a church that recognized blacks as evil. I wonder how far he himself has evolved from that upbringing?

Cares about the consequences, white supremacist happiness or no.  Honestly.  I think he is the ultimate end-game to the evolving concept of "politician", willing to say anything, do anything, just to win.  And everyone knows it - otherwise, he'd not get away with 1/10th of the mendacity and lack of shame and good home training he displays on a daily basis.

Since winning is strictly a numbers game, all votes are good votes to someone like him.  If it's spider web tattooed, gun totin, white supremacists that put him over the top? I suspect in his mind, so be it.  After all, it's not most of these neanderthal racists are ever going to challenge his world order, which starts and ends with mo money, mo money, mo money.

that race-baiting is playing with fire.

Too many folks think that racial animus is something the power structure can turn on and off at will. This is a problem with a lot of "analysis" of the Tea Party phenomenon. Too many have tried to write it off as a completely astro-turf entity. Would that it were so.

The grim fact is, as you point out, a significant section of the population retains a white supremacist outlook. Ignoring the autonomous mass potential inherent in this reservoir of racism is courting disaster.

Nothing human is alien to me.

  •  Where do these repubs shop for their dog whistles? (0+ / 0-)

When I was growing up, dog whistles were these very thin metal things that shrieked in an inaudible frequency range.

The GOP is using specially-made low frequency dog whistles that can be heard by everybody who is listening.

They resonate right in the wheelhouse of my audible frequency range.

So the GOP is not using dog whistles anymore.  Please stop calling them dogwhistles....

......unless of course we are all dogs.
