Paul Ryan was probably one of the worst picks for conservatives.  Strangely enough, it's because Ryan is a true conservative and now makes the ticket a truly conservative ticket.

Most conservatives, and people across the country, had their doubts about how conservative Romney really is.  If you look at his health care law in Mass., some of the other laws he passed, and his past statements, he certainly comes across more as an opportunist rather than a conservative.

This past week, conservatives everywhere were putting pressure on Romney to pick not only a conservative VP, but specifically, Paul Ryan.  Now the conservatives have exactly what they asked for.

If Romney had picked someone who the conservatives could deny was a true conservative, it opened up the door for enormous opportunities for conservatives in 2014 and 2016.  When Romney loses, they could have blamed it on, the ticket wasn't a real conservative ticket.  With most Republicans being totally irrational, the conservatives could have swept the primaries, and probably the elections of 2014 and 2016 based on the false claim that we have never had a true conservative government since Reagan.

That opportunity is now out the window with the Paul Ryan pick.  In fact, the situation is now dramatically reversed.  There can be no denying that this is the most conservative ticket ever to run for president, and it will be a campaign about the most conservative budget ever proposed in the modern United States.

Instead of this being a referendum on Obama's first term, with the pick of Ryan, this election is a referendum on the Ryan budget, and more broadly, the fundamental principles of conservatism itself!  When Romney/Ryan lose this election, the Republican party will have to go back and reexamine where the hard turn to the right, since 1980 has taken them, especially if they don't take over the Senate, again, because of the Tea Party candidates.

The Conservatives made a deal with the devil when they created the Tea Party, and now they've gotten exactly what they asked for in the Paul Ryan/Ayn Rand ultra conservative.  This election is now the ultimate test of conservatism.  Can these extremists win elections, and when it's proven they can't, what will the Republican party do?

As they say, be careful of what you ask for, you just might get it.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    •  Palin was too far out there for country clubbers (4+ / 0-)

McCain came across as less conservative than Romney because of campaign finance and Global warming, and the conservatives in the Republican party were in no way demanding Sarah Palin, especially the country clubbers.

Sarah Palin also did not have the ultimate conservative budget to run against.  The country club conservatives have put it all on the line in this election.  They have exactly what they want in Romney and Ryan and they've given up an enormous opportunity for 2014 and 2016.

A lot of iffy Republicans will be wondering if these radical conservatives are leading the party down to constant defeat.

    •  Palin didn't have a budget gutting Medicare (0+ / 0-)

people already know about this -- especially seniors.  I was sick and didn't know about the Ryan pic until my sister told me today.  She's 70.  She was almost incoherent in trying to describe what he was going to do to Medicare and Social Security.  The message is already out there.

I think a lot of men fantasized about Palin in a red, white and blue bikini washing their car -- that's not going to happen with Ryan.

We don't need to underestimate him -- just make hay with all of the material he has given us.

I'll bet OFA and Obama already had a game plan for Ryan and other possible picks.  They are very efficient and effective.

It's not only seniors but younger people who have parents or relatives on Medicare/Social Security.  They have hit a live wire with this.

Now we can get down to the real work and get out the votes.  This will help all down the line.

They just double down. If they lose the last 3 years of obstructionism will seem tame.

Remember, the Republican party is nothing more than a wholey owned subsidiary of a very few rich Oligarchs.  There would not be a Tea Party without the money these rich guys put out, and the media network they've created.  A few guys pull all the switches and determine the direction the Republican party will go.

They're not stupid.  They will invest in what works and change what doesn't.  By losing this election with a moderate ticket, they had a real opportunity to get exactly what they wanted in 2014 and 2016.  Especially since the economy will be much worse since then.

But with the public rejecting this country club dream ticket, especially since they rejected Bush's privatize everything 2nd term, it's going to be real hard to sink hundreds of millions of dollars to do the same thing in 2014 and 2016.

This is putting the true meaning of conservatism out there for everyone to see.  Without Ryan, they could have denied the Romney/moderate ticket was real conservatism, and come back again for another try.

I think this puts it all on the line.  The Dems need to hammer a nail into conservatism itself, and leave the personalities out of it (except Romney is too good to pass up).  Do to the word "conservative", what Republicans have done to "liberal"!
