This isn't going to be an exceptionally long or creative diary tonight. I spent much of the day waging battle against my university's financial aid office (because there is no "talking" to Financial Aid...you must enter on a horse wielding a sword, figuratively speaking) and tying up loose ends I need to tie before the beginning of the school year. And now I'm packing for my lovely weekend, courtesy of my wonderful BF, at a spa in Dallas.
So I thought I'd keep it short and throw the floor open tonight. What's your favorite movie?
I'm not talking about movies you see and, as you're leaving the theater, exclaim, "That was the best movie ever!" I do that quite frequently--although, not as often as of late, since there haven't been many good movies that have been released. I'm talking about your favorite movie of all time. If you had to choose a single movie that you loved over every other movie you've ever seen, what would it be?
Follow me below the doodle-thingy to learn what mine is.

Whenever somebody asks me what my favorite movie of all time is, I'm thrown for a loop. I like many, many movies. I like many types of movies. For example, I can tell you what my favorite horror movie is (if you promise not to throw tomatoes at me)--The Blair Witch Project. That film is a masterpiece, a low-budget work of art that scares me silly every time I watch it. I can tell you what my favorite comedy is--Bridesmaids.
But when asked to elevate a single movie above every other movie I've ever seen, it gets a bit more difficult. I have to weigh my choices and think quite a bit more.
When it's all said and done, my favorite film isn't a classic like Citizen Kane. No, I think Rob Reiner's 1986 film Stand By Me is my favorite movie of all time. If you haven't seen it, it's based on Stephen King's novella "The Body," one of his non-scary stories. It's about a group of kids who, upon hearing of the existence of a dead body in the woods many miles away, embark on a journey to find it. Along the way, they get covered in leeches when they cross a creek, get chased by a train on a railroad bridge, and, above all, strengthen their bonds of friendship. I love the movie so much I get goosebumps just watching the trailer:
I really like coming-of-age movies, and Stand By Me, in my humble opinion, is the quintessential coming-of-age movie. I like the movie (and other coming-of-age movies), I guess, because it brings back fond memories of my own childhood. Back when life was simple and my biggest worry was finding a leech on my leg when I climbed out of the creek. Back when my best friend was more like a brother than a friend. Way back before I entered middle and high school and things started getting complicated. No, I never went on an adventure to find a dead body, but I had plenty of childhood adventures in my day. Every once in a while, it's nice to look back and maybe even long for what you can never have again.
I watched Stand By Me again this afternoon as I was doing laundry and packing. Nothing brings on a need for childhood nostalgia like a trip to the financial aid office, where solving problems isn't as simple as yanking a leech off your arm (although, I'm sure I could draw some kind of metaphor involving leeches and be pretty accurate).
The floor is open: What's your favorite movie and why?

This comment by blue aardvark in JeffLieber's Dick Tweets diary made me so nostalgic for the betamax days of the 80s, but the diary and all of the comments are rec-worthy.
