Instead of withdrawing from his Senate race and removing himself from the limelight, Todd Akin announced today that he would not be withdrawing from the Missouri Senate race between himself and Claire McCaskill.

The support of the religious-right turned out to be enough to keep Todd Akin from dropping out. Akin just confirmed on the radio that he would be staying in the race, and disagreed with fellow Republicans who have called for a new candidate.

On Sunday, Akin took to the airwaves making offensive suggestions about what qualified as 'legitimate rape'.

"First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare," Akin said in an interview with KTVI-TV. "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."
Yesterday, Karl Rove's Super PAC - Crossroads GPS - announced that it would be pulling all funds from the Missouri Senate race.

But Akin has decided to stay in, so the firestorm continues.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Plus this is only the first deadline. Adkins can drop off in several weeks as long as the GOP pays for printing new ballots.

I think he will stay in today, but drop out in time for the Republicans to run a new candidate.

This will prove that Sarah Palin was a better VP candidate than Paul Ryan since Akin and Ryan are tied at the hip with their anti-abortion stances.

And of course, we still need to strongly support Claire McCaskill so we can win and we keep the Senate Democratic for two more years(2014 has at least two vulnerable Dems:  Landrieu and Pryor)

It still means that time has passed that the GOP couldn't campaign for someone else.

Unless the GOP puts up a proposed write-in candidate and then when the opening appears, moves that candidate in. That's how I would handle it, were I GOP.

  •  To drop out by 5 CDT (0+ / 0-)

he'd have to, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

If he changes his mind and exits, he would have until 5 p.m. today to withdraw from the ballot without the involvement of a court, under Missouri law. He would have to put a statement of withdrawal in writing, have it signed and notarized, and have it delivered to the Missouri Secretary of State's office by the deadline.
Don't know where Akin is physically at right now, his video this morning was based in St. Louis, but if he's not anywhere near Jefferson City, he'll have a hard time making the deadline.  As the diarist points out - he's staying in.
