First let me say that I in no way, shape or form hope Tropical Storm/Hurricane Isaac makes landfall anywhere, ever. Having sat through a couple of them while living in Coastal North Carolina I can attest to the feeling of helplessness as the storm rages around you and dealing with the aftermath of even a tropical storm can be messy, time consuming and expensive.
However, having said that, I do admit I am feeling a bit of delicious irony watching Isaac bear down on the GOP convention. There is even a chance it will tee off directly on Tampa. However, the most likely current location for landfall is around Cape Coral, FL ~150 miles south of Tampa then wind it's way up the coast and pass directly over where the GOP's freak show will kick off on Monday.
I'm waiting with bated breath to find out how the Christian Conservative wingnuts are going to spin this one. I mean through the years they've blamed any number of natural disasters on God punishing Americans for our many sins. The most egregious being Pat Robertson. Though the widely reported story of Pat saying Katrina was punishment for Ellen Degeneres being selected to host the Emmys has been proven to be false, he and other evangelical preachers did manage to claim Katrina was punishment for a long list of other sins. Michelle Bachmann has even said that Hurricane Irene and the subsequent earthquake were God's punishment for obesity or government or something equally insane. These aren't the only examples and through the years America's supposed lack of respect for God's laws has been blamed for any number of natural disasters by those who claim to have a direct line to the Big Man in the Sky.
So here comes Isaac, prepared to smack the GOP's big show on the very day the curtain goes up on all the extremism. The week they get the spotlight and get to show off their brand spanking new anti-women, anti-science, pro-large-clips-of-ammo agenda they might just get washed away. Of course by the time Mitt takes the stage Isaac will have long since passed along and maybe (hopefully) no lasting damage will be left behind. However, if Isaac decides to "forcibly" rip the roof off the Tampa Bay Times Forum injuring absolutely no one but sending a message that could be interpreted to say, "You don't fuck with Mama Nature especially when it comes to women's reproductive rights," it would be pretty freaking hilarious.
