Republican Tommy Thompson has been emulating Mitt Romney in his bid for Wisconsin's open senate seat. He's made his millions, and the taxes he did or didn't pay on that are none of your goddamned business. It's a good opening for Democrat Tammy Baldwin, and she took it. Check out this ad, showing how adamant and angry Thompson is over the tax question.

Thompson: Am I going to release my tax returns? The answer is no. No. [...] The answer is N-O. What part don't you understand?
Goal Thermometer
Thompson is benefitting from a post-primary bounce, according to a new PPP's poll. From previous polling that found Baldwin and Thompson tied at 45 percent, he now has a five point advantage, 49-44. That, PPP found, is a result of "GOP voters getting on the same page. Thompson now leads by 89 points with Republicans, 93-4. Previously he had just a 77 point lead with them at 84-7." His favorability rating has improved, too, up to 46 percent from 40 when PPP polled in July.

The crotchety old man in that video, refusing to come clean on his millions and his taxes, isn't so likable. This is a smart hit on Thompson, one that he completely opened himself up to by telling voters that they'll just have to trust him. Because the last thing a voter is going to trust a politician on is money.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  One of the best ads I've seen come out of a (15+ / 0-)

Wisconsin Democrat in a long time.  I saw it a couple days ago and thought it was a killer.  Combined with her other "Thompsen's not for us anymore" ads, I have high hopes.

I think it's wise of her to focus on what he's been doing since he was governor.  She's definitely making him look and sound like an out of touch, rich, crotchety man who came back to Wisconsin just for this and is in it for himself.

    Go Tammy Baldwin!!

another version of Romney to reprsent them in the senate is a very good idea. I know I don't want him there to begin with as he does not represent me. But an older crochety version of Romney in the senate as a republican? As Whoopie Goldberg would say""Oh HELL NO!"

  •  Nice touch with the "ANYMORE". (6+ / 0-)

One of the most difficult tasks that Rep. Baldwin will have is convincing people that THIS Tommy Thompson is not the somewhat-moderate sorta-bipartisan Tommy Thompson who was governor for 14 years.

This is bat guano crazy teabag Republican Tommy Thompson. She can beat that guy.

Repugnants are riding this horse into the ground. Hopefully this ground has a high cliff presiding it. But repugs are betting they have the 'my privacy rights' whine to wash this away with dinner. If they all ride the same theme then of course they are being attacked by those mean slimey socialists.
Knowing a few of the tea baggers well (can't pick family) that argument will work to keep the tea tight. Regardless of the baggers we have a good window and we need to keep it open. Does Thompson have anything to hide? Likely not. But Romney, well, once a liar.

  •  Don't thik this registers with conservatives (0+ / 0-)

I live in western Sheboygan County.   This is one of the most conservative parts of the state.   Tommy's tax situation is totally unimportant to my neighbors.   Many actually like the way he handled the situation.   If you live in Madison or Milwaukee you are not hearing what I am hearing.  I would run the ad for another 5 days,  if the polls aren't moving then don't run it anymore.   Jobs for young recent college grads and high school grads is much more important for most of our state than the tax issue.

I believe Tammy needs to talk directly to the young people of this state and relate her plans for improving their prospects for employment.   Tammy has a great personality,  a positive message from here will go a log ways!

    •  If Thompson releases tax returns it exposes the 1% (0+ / 0-)

Let's face it, the majority of the 1% use every tax loop hole they can. The government knows but intentionally remains almost oblivious to how corrupt the system is. I think the reason for this is obvious.
It's a closely guarded "house of cards". Articles have been written but only expose what is general knowledge.Tens  of millions of dollars were spent to  expose Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky...why hasn't that amount of money, interest and energy ever been used to "fully understand our tax laws."
Or how tax loop holes work? This will never happen!
At least this makes Tommy Thompson look arrogant!
