A Republican offered a liberal a ticket...the liberal renegotiated for a drink and a popcorn.  The Republican said "okay" and I went to see 2016: Obama's Evil (possibly incorrect title).

My republican co-worker has been talking about this movie (which he hasn't seen yet...beside the point I guess) and said I should go see it because it would "open my eyes to Obama".

Obviously my friend will be disappointed when he sees it.  First off D'Souza (known in this diary as "DD") gave the impression that Obama was born in Hawaii.  No audible boos or sighs from the audience, but maybe the audience was asleep?   But there was still plenty of conspiracy theory and intrigue.  But back to the start of this movie/smear.

The film starts with some exposition from DD about how DD is like Obama because DD was born in India and Obama is the son of a guy he barely knew who was born in Kenya.  Totally the same!

Seriously DD was also born in the same year, graduated college in the same year, was Ivy League, and married in the same years.  They're practically brothers.  Except DD loves America while Obama hates America.  Random dot connecting followed.  I liked the film up until this point as I do find it inspiring that D'Souza and Obama were able to rise to great heights in America from humble beginnings.  But the film was all downhill after about ten minutes.

The basic point of the film was that DD was going to construct Obama's worldview from the viewpoints of people Obama knew.  The most important worldview according to DD was Obama's dad, from whom Obama's anti colonialism stems.  Obama was also effected by various other mentors and professors.  Imagine that, a college professor influencing his students.  Anyway Obama isn't a Muslim according to DD.  Not going to rehash every point since a lot of the conspiracy theories about Obama and his "League of Conspiratory Gentlemen" is well known.

What he is, according to DD, is (in so many words) an anti-American anti-colonial who wants to redistribute the wealth of America to the third world.  He also wants to bankrupt America for revenge...for something.  He also wants to weaken the American military.  DD ignores that American defense spending continued to grow under Obama and instead focused on the reduction in nuclear arms under the New START treaty of 2010 from 5,000 to 1,500 nuclear weapons.

http://en.wikipedia.org/...

DD did what he did throughout the film by ignoring the numerous other nuclear reduction treaties the US has entered.  But half truths are what this film is constructed from.

The budget deficits are a major tong in the trident DD tries to stick Obama with (besides anti-colonial redistribution of wealth and the weakening of the American military).  DD ignores the recession and the Bush tax cuts which are major reasons the deficit exploded.

That's a brief review, I'm tired and couldn't take through notes since I saw the film in the theater.  DD also brought up that stupid Winston Churchill bust as evidence of Obama's anti colonialism.  Other tropes, including walking stupid Daniel Pipes, were evident throughout the film.  Dog-whistles were subtle as DD tried to maintain some semblance of neutrality and journalistic rigor but he was largely failed to keep his bias out of his documentary.

Otherwise the film should be noted for the extremely melodramatic nature.  I half expected Young-Obama-actor to cut his hand and swear a blood oath at the foot of his father's grave in Kenya.   The true villain in my opinion were colonial exploiters, both British and American.  The dark parts of American history such as the annexation of Hawaii against the native's will were the most interesting and compelling parts for me.  Perhaps Native Americans would say the same if they weren't, you know, mostly dead and assimilated.    The real heart of the film for me wasn't the right-wing pundits DD lined up to attack Obama but African men, especially Obama's half-brother George, talking about colonial oppression.

George provided perhaps the best conservative opinion I've seen articulated.  When DD tried to get George to say something bad because Obama wouldn't help him out of poverty, George replied "he has a family of his own.  I'm a grown man and can care for myself" [paraphrasing].  No complaint, just he would handle his business.  Obama has more important things to do.

Most people will have more important things to do than see this film.  It is as advertised.  An Obama attack piece which trots out every negative trope short of birtherism.  It will confirm for Republicans that Obama is an evil anti-American intent on undoing American from the bastion of American power.  Democrats will confirm that Dinesh D'Souza is a conservative.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I do recommend it if only for the melodramatic and horror elements.  They will prove extremely effective in confirming the fears of Republicans.

  •  Again we see signs of this being a bizarro 2004 (10+ / 0-)

This is the closet thing the right can come to their version of Fahrenheit 911. I remember when Moore's film came out there was a lot of thinking in Liberal circles that if enough people saw that movie, and told their friends about it Bush would totally lose. The truth about his supposed "heroics" and actions in the lead up and aftermath of 911 would undercut his ability to get re-elected.

Turns out it likely didn't make any difference at all. The same will be true of this film.

We lose if we choose to forget; the lives of men, and money spent.

I left real quick after the movie was over to get a glimpse of the crowd.  It was pretty busy for a 9:45 showing but the crowd was completely white.  At least 100 people and probably 2/3s over 50.  A few young people such as myself but mostly seniors and middle class whites (the polo shirt tucked into khaki shorts are a great signal to me).

That said, this election will be closer than 2004.  Stagnant/declining median wages will prompt many working/middle-class Dems to give Romney a chance.

      What can the Dems do?

Let's start by proposing a PERMANENT increase in the Earned Income Tax Credit of 1,500 per person, to compensate for stagnant wages.

Instead, Dems aren't even entertaining extending the payroll tax holiday.

That alone will constitute a tax hike of at least 1,200 on each worker earning 60,000 a year. (60000*.02)

  •  And Bin Laden's not dead... (4+ / 0-)

He's in Nicaragua, growing an army of Al Qaeda-Sandinista hybrid super soldiers out of embryonic stem cells so Obama can steal all the guns of Red Staters after the election.

Bin Laden will be the new Oil Sheikh of the United Texas Emirates, the Somali pirates get Charleston South Carolina, and Gaddafi is getting the missile bases in the Dakotas (he's already got the Sheriff Marge hat.)

I mean thats common knowledge...good thing D'Souza hasn't learned about the dragons...oops said too much.

    have to....

I have been wondering a bit about it as I saw the ads on TV....

I am suspicious of any movie that carries the warning that some govt official doesn't want to see it ...
If the movie is half as melodramatic as the ads, it must be a real agony to see ...

Thank you for your review ... I would like to see some other reviews, possibly from so called professional reviewers

I can't wait for Obama to give us third world countries the billions in american wealth the US owes us for years of colonial torture and meddling. I can't wait for him to destroy this shitty nation's military and public and send us back to the third world shithole we deserve to be.

Unfortunately none of that will happen.

The reviewer stated that a Republican gave him a free ticket.  Are they actually selling tickets to willing buyers? Are they posting free "tickets" on right-wing websites that can be printed and brought to the theatre?

Why would someone pay good money to see this trash? Can't these people afford good porn?

  •  Obamaphobia is a matter of some complexion (0+ / 0-)

Ever since Obama became the Democratic nominee for POTUS in 2008, most of those who have issues with Obama's ethnic heritage have been too cowardly to openly state their bigotry, so they have disguised it by using other loaded labels such as elitist (code for "he doesn't know his place"), unpatriotic and/or has unAmerican values, undeserving of a Harvard education, foreign-born, Marxist, socialist, fascist, terrorist-sympathizer, Muslim, … anti-Christ  -- all of which are designed to convey the notion that Obama was not legitimately elected POTUS and that he is inherently different than the rest of us and therefore cannot be trusted.

an "anti colonial" world view in a single childhood visit lasting only a few days, eh? Obama's relationship with his father was marked by his father's absence, not his presence.

  •  Dinesh comparing himself to Obama stupid (0+ / 0-)

First of all, what and a who a person associates with as a young person is irrelevant to his views as an adult.
I have listened to and been friendly with some  so called communists. Some of my relatives have been socialists/Communist sympathizers in India, and Dinesh D Souza should know better that the strain of communism you see in Africa and non Chinese Asia has a lot to do with regular socialism than communism and it is partly a reaction to centuries of exploitation. So anyone searching for the truth will examine why people support dumb systems like communism. I am sure Obama associated with such people in the past just like he has associated with the capitalists. I know Obama' s type. They like to have discussions with people of all types and I am sure he was kind of trying to make sense of a lot of disparate political theories. Any thoughtful person will go through that.

Now, when it comes to this movie, it goes beyond even that and is your typical ridiculous theorizing by a moron like Dinesh D Souza.

And how dare he compare himself to Obama. Dinesh does not qualify to become President because he was actually a foreigner for his entire childhood. Obama has been born American, has an American mom, and is not the AMERICAN PRESIDENT. Fuck you Dinesh D Souza and am embarassed that you are an indian.

  •  2016 is showing in The Villages... (0+ / 0-)

...the mega-Republican retirement playground in Florida where Ryan trotted out his mom to convince the gray-hairs he has no intention of gutting Medicare.

Villages head honcho H. Gary Morse used his clout to get it booked at the Old Mill Playhouse theater there. I was there this afternoon during the 2 p.m. set and there was a long line waiting to get in - all white, all Villagers.

The auditorium it's paying in is OMP's largest, with a capacity of a little over 300 people. I gather at least two showings today were at or near capacity.

I vote we run Rick Scott out of Florida on a high-speed rail.

walls. God help me but I ignored them so far.

Other than the absurdity of painting Obama as a Socialist/Marxist, one other thing they mention in the movie is that all white people who voted for Obama did it because of his race or "white guit."

Of course, it couldn't have been that most of us saw the Maverick McCain and his sidekick Palin and were scared witless of them being in power.

This seems like one to watch on DVD while drinking heavily.
