I normally don't recommend reading David Brooks to anyone with high blood pressure or an allergy to smug condescension, but today Brooks is worth a look. He reveals the truth behind the Etch-A-Sketch with his biographical summary of Mitt Romney.
Mitt Romney was born on March 12, 1947, in Ohio, Florida, Michigan, Virginia and several other swing states. He emerged, hair first, believing in America, and especially its national parks. He was given the name Mitt, after the Roman god of mutual funds, and launched into the world with the lofty expectation that he would someday become the Arrow shirt man.
The whole thing is worth reading because it's snark with way too much truth in it, and because it demonstrates how dangerous Brooks could be if he ever chose to exercise his talents beyond being a mere conservative media functionary.

UPDATE: Oops - I was in such a hurry to write this up before dashing out the door this morning, I see that I A) forgot to put in a link, and B) didn't see this had already been diaried. (Great minds think alike, or something like that.) Thanks to those who pointed it out in comments.
Still can't resist writing this up. I guess even David Brooks gets tired of putting lipstick on conservative pigs day after day, not to mention the hard work of building arguments with straw men. Let's all do him a favor, and put something up on Facebook linking to his momentary lapse into apostasy. It's the least we can do while his conservative hack brethren ignore him to death for saying what they all know.
