Yet another sign of the demographic bombs awaiting Republicans, along with the browning of America, and the increasing tolerance of gays being open and fully included in society.
Look at the graphs. The only generation in which the Republicans have an advantage is the Silents, and that only by 4%, 48-44.
Yes, the peak for Dems among Millenials, 62%, was in 2008 with the excitement Obama generated then. But note that the direction of the trend is again in favor of Democrats.
If you follow the links for more details, the Dems have continued to see the overall advantage they had before the 2010 election debacle diminish. Notice from the more detailed analysis provided the following:
In more than 13,000 interviews conducted so far in 2012, 35% of registered voters identify with the Democratic Party, 28% with the Republican Party and 33% as independents. The share of Democrats has fallen three points since 2008, while the proportion of Republicans has remained steady.
When the leanings of independent voters are taken into account, the closing of the Democratic advantage is even more noticeable. Currently, independents lean slightly more toward the Republican Party than the Democratic Party (15% vs. 13%). Four years ago, the reverse was true (13% leaned Democratic, 11% Republican).
The trend of Millennials in the Democrats favor has enough momentum to arrest the Democratic decline Of course, there is the question of what proportion of Millennials will turn out in November.
I also think there is this to consider - after the success of the Democratic convention, and how I think the rest of the campaign may well play out - despite or perhaps because of the carpet-bombing of negative and attack advertising from the other side - the overall trend is likely to move back in the Democratic direction.
For now, I am more than happy to see the trend among Millennials.
Peace.
