Solid science education is the best inoculation against ignorance.
The Inoculation Project, founded in 2009 by hyperbolic pants explosion, is a group of Kossacks who gather weekly to combat the anti-science push in conservative America by providing direct funding to science and math projects in red state classrooms. Our conduit is, a twelve-year-old organization rated highly by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau. Here's a little introductory video about DonorsChoose. allows you to make direct contributions to specific, vetted projects in public school classrooms, resulting in tremendous and immediate impacts from small dollar donations. Each week, we focus on funding a single small-dollar project at a time, in a traditionally red state classroom and preferably in a high-poverty district.
Look for us every SUNDAY morning at 10 AM ET/ 7 AM PT.

This Week's Main Project
Project: Density Matters!

Resources Needed: cubes and ball density set, ocean model, 10 calculators
School Poverty Level: High
Location: East Cobb Middle School, Marietta, GA
Total Cost: $701.82
Still Needed: $140.65 COMPLETED! Please see bonus project.
Expires: Oct 03, 2012

Teacher's Comments from Mrs. Koval:

My Students: Density can be a very tricky concept to understand. Help my students comprehend this physical property which will help them understand the rest of the curriculum.

My students are 8th grade science students in a suburban school in Georgia. They attend a Title 1 school with a high transiency rate. For many of my students, up until this grade level they have not considered careers in science or engineering. Through physical science they will see how these careers can be accessible to them.

My Project: The density kits and calculators will help my students to better understand the concept of density through experience and mathematically. Although density is covered in the curriculum of 6th, 7th and 8th grades, it is a key concept to physical science that my students have always struggled with. Experiencing how density is a function of both mass and volume by using the kits will help them better comprehend the concept and relate it to the flow of heat and energy. The calculators will be used throughout the year as students need to mathematically compute density and velocity and acceleration.

Please help my students (and future students) have a better understanding of density. The density kits will help them experience how the density of a material is a function of both its mass and volume. Having access to calculators will also help them understand density mathematically. Thank you for considering donating to this project. My students will benefit from these materials for years.

Please see bonus projects below!
We try to focus on the main project until it is completely funded, and then move on to the bonus project. If a project doesn't meet its funding goal by its deadline, it dies and any donations to it are referred to their donors to be moved to another project. For that reason, we don't like to split our sometimes limited resources between two open projects. Of course the choice of project to which you donate (if any!) is entirely yours.
Bonus Project #1
When the main project is finished, let's work on this one.
Project: Integers!!! Start Your Engines!

Resources Needed: 2 games (Integer Speedway, Operation Integer)
School Poverty Level: High
Location: New Caney 6th Grade Campus, Porter, TX
Total Cost: $348.44
Still Needed: $144.22 $134.22
Expires: Oct 27, 2012

Teacher's Comments from Mrs. Palmer:

My Students: Negative Numbers??? Do you remember the excitement and maybe a bit of fear that you felt when you discovered there was a whole world of numbers on "the other side" of zero?

My students are 6th graders in one of the fastest growing districts in Texas. While our district has nine elementary schools, all these schools funnel into one sixth grade campus. We have students from many different socioeconomic backgrounds and cultures. This year I had four different languages as the native tongues of my students.

My Project: In the upcoming school year, I will have 3 classes with about 25 students and 1 tutoring class with less than 10 students. Each of these classes will be introduced to negative numbers for the first time! I can hardly wait! The students get so excited about learning something so new, but for some it is difficult. The games would keep them interested in learning and make the concept very non-threatening. Learning without the fear of failure is the key to success for many of my students.

Integers form the basis for so much of "real world" math. Temperature, checking accounts, and inventories all are based on integers. My students need these games to learn the concepts they will use not only in higher level math courses, but use in LIFE!

Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference!
Bonus Project #2

Lately, we've had a lot of success and paid for our projects early, leaving no way for latecomers to participate. While that's great, it's also a missed opportunity to help one more teacher. If you arrive and find bonus project #1 finished, please direct your donations to this project. We'll return to it as needed in future diaries.
Project: Sim STEM 8th Grade Science

Resources Needed: Games and resources about Green energy
School Poverty Level: High
Location: Osceola Middle School, Osceola, Arkansas
Total Cost: $382.01
Still Needed: $382.01 $199.78
Expires: Dec 24, 2012

Teacher's Comments from Mrs. Roach:

My Students: Our 8th grade science class provides hands on experiences for students which prepares them socially, academically, and developmentally. These experiences allow students opportunities at school that they may not be able to receive at home.

We are a 100% free and reduced lunch school located in a high-poverty area. We try very hard to meet the needs of our students. Although, we have students come to us with limited experiences and background knowledge, we provide students with many enrichment opportunities.

My Project: My students are a very energetic group. They need one Energy and Its Source Game and one Renewable Energy Education Set. These items will provide students with the opportunity to work cooperatively together through solving problems. These resources will allow my students to explore the world of renewable energy and provide fun activities that will provide lasting effects

Your donations will provide many opportunities for students. Problem-solving is a skill that can be used throughout a person's life. I feel that our renewable energy project will provide these students with an experience they will never forget.

Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference!
Our Dollars at Work
High school students from Mrs. Moore's class show off their model fuel cell car kits provided by the project, Fuel of the Future: Fuel Cell Power.

Mrs. Moore's thank you note and additional photos can be seen at the link.

Last week's main project, Time for Learning!!, was completed. Elementary students in Lexington, Mississippi will have hand held mini clocks to help them learn how to tell time.

The bonus project last week, Fun with Fractions, was also completed. Elementary students in Gretna, Louisiana will have fraction titles to aid them in learning to compare, add and subtract fractions.

You can see the teacher's thank-you note at the links above. Many thanks to all contributors!

See our list of successfully funded projects. We're up to 223!

When projects are not fully funded by their expiration date, donors are contacted by DonorsChoose and asked to choose another project to which to redirect their donations.

Tagging tips - Search For Tags - Browse For Tags

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
