Someone sent me a link to this event on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 8:30 PM (EDT).
The Supreme Court term beginning this October will feature cases that could decide the fate of many progressive policies and protections millions of Americans rely on, including affirmative action and important safeguards against corporate abuse. The Court also is very likely to issue landmark rulings on the constitutionality of the Voting Rights Act and restrictions on marriage equality. So we're teaming up with some of the brightest legal minds and best communicators the progressive movement has to offer to bring you an hour long tele-briefing on these vitally important cases and how you can hold the media accountable for its reporting on the Court. You’ll learn what the media gets wrong (and right) about the Roberts Court’s conservative majority, the majority’s willingness to involve the Court in hot-button political controversies and how the Court’s decisions could reshape America.
Speakers will include:
Adam Bonin - Chair, Netroots Nation; DailyKos contributing front page writer on legal issues; Law Office of Adam Bonin
Amy Howe - Editor and "Plain English" Columnist, SCOTUSblog; Partner, Goldstein & Russell, P.C.
Alan Jenkins - Executive Director and Co-founder, Opportunity Agenda; former Assistant to the U.S. Solicitor General
David Lyle - Director, Courts Matter
At Media Matters, we work every day to hold journalists and news outlets accountable for misinformation. When the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act, major media outlets incorrectly reported to millions of Americans that the court had overturned the legislation. But it wasn't just the decision they got wrong. Many in the media covered it as a purely political story - who's winning and who's losing in DC - ignoring the decision's profound and lasting repercussions for all of us. Americans deserve accurate information and better explanations of the highest court in our land.
Progressives can make compelling and accurate arguments about what these issues mean and how the Supreme Court's role and actions will influence our society for years to come.
