Steve Klein, the christian militia enforcer associated with the Innocence of Muslim agit-prop, claimed the purpose of the film was to acquire intelligence on AQ supporters in Southern California.

The movie poster for the now notorious June 30th 2012 showing supports that claim:

Below the fold, I consider the claims that Nakoula was a confidential informant and the implication that the "Innocence" project was a sanctioned  intelligence operation that has gone seriously off the rails.

I will try to steer clear of the hyperventilating conspiracy and deal only with what has been claimed  by the principals and what is corroborated.

Steve Klein was quick to claim the movie was a honey-pot to entrap domestic supporters of Bin Laden.  His biography claimed he and his (Egyptian) associates went undercover to discover terrorist cells in the aftermath of 9/11.  No confirmation of these claims, and the So Cal undercover operations that have been reported involved a  weightlifter who ingratiated himself with Egyptian muslims.

Klein has claimed he dyed his hair and mustache to stake out the 6/30/12 showing.  Similarly, the LA press reporting said police officers called to observe the showing detected Nakoula in a cafe across the street and accosted him as he watched the Vine theater entrance.

A peculiar aspect of this narrative is the claim by John Walsh that the showing never happened, he says he tried to buy tickets but was told the show was canceled.

The poster (captured by a concerned blogger) has a Georgia landline as a contact.  The line is still live today, where a recording asks you to submit a credit card number to connect.

If Klein has any truth to his claim of undercover ops in 2001 using Egyptian Copts as coparticipants, then his 2012 escapade (dyed hair!) would recruit the same group. Klein in some way fits the profile of the deep agent from Cointelpro days -- the itinerant expert in weapons circulating through various groups, but his participation in constitutional lawsuits on leafleting makes that assignment problematic and his hyper-active public role is also exceptional.

Klein's close co-participant in the curbside leafleting of High School in northern San Diego and Riverside county is a James Horn.  Horn claims to have been a CIA asset in Cambodia.  Horn's wife claims to be a Iraqi refugee (she details a biography on message boards in news reporting on the Murietta High School leafleting).

LA press reporting have looked at Nakoula's previous run-in with the law, and assumed he pled out and cooperated.  They note that much of Nakoula's file has been redacted (from the Meth bust).  The meth bust corresponds to a period when federal agencies were pursuing Hezbollah meth cartels. (per reporting).  His plea, sentence and release from Lompoc for the most recent fraud charge is also irregular and shortened.

The film permit issued to "Media for Christ" has been suppressed (in a hold whose authority and rationale has shifted) despite local press requests to review the forms.

The LA press' working assumption is that Nakoula had been turned and was serving as confidential informant for some of the period of his legal troubles. Not explained are his frequent recidivism, as he ended up back in jail for violations of parole.

The claim by Nakoula that he borrowed money from his wife's family to make the movie is fundamentally implausible given his legal and financial difficulties.  Possibly, he is the catalyst, believing that delivering a SoCal terrorist cell through private sleuthing would make his legal difficulties go away.

Reporting on Nakoula say he disappeared for weeks on trips to "Egypt" during the period.  This seems incompatible for a parolee.  Either his supervision was extremely lax ($100,000 money, overseas travel, i-net use) or some subset of these activities had been greenlighted by his handlers.

Sat Sep 15, 2012 at 7:23 AM PT: As G2Geek's comment brings into sharp relief a salient point:  Professionals would run away from this rag-tag group of blowhards and grifters.
Case in point: A core feature of Klein's biography was the injury of his son on duty in Iraq.  The incident is retold in 3 versions on bio's authored by Klein himself. In the three versions, there are different casualties-- in one a captain is saved by Klein's son, and in another the captain dies.

Bacile in a coached and supervised situation would not resort to transparent lies-- which have marked every stage of the discovery process.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    Gawker tonight:

He's the creative vision behind softcore porn classics like The Happy Hooker Goes Hollywood.
Gawker tried to interview him about "Innocence," but hasn't been able to reach him.  Friends say he's turned off his phone.  His real name is Robert Brownell.
An actress who worked with Roberts on Innocence of Muslims agreed that he had nothing to do with the political bent of the film.

"My gut tells me he was just a has-been director who was trying to prove he could still be Hollywood," she wrote in an email.

  •  The press claims Nakoula has a lawyer. (8+ / 0-)

A man entering Nakoula's house this afternoon described himself as attorney "Steve Seiden", according to the LA Times. There is an attorney by that name in Hawthorne who handles personal injury and DUI cases. But, comparing the photo at that link to the NYTimes photo of Steve Klein in this article, they look an awful lot alike.

  •  Here's more on the permit including a link (6+ / 0-)
The filming permit for the controversial "Innocence of Muslims" has been temporarily pulled from public view at the request of federal agencies, Los Angeles County officials said Thursday.

Film permits are normally available on the Internet through the nonprofit group FilmL.A., but officials there referred Times reporters to county attorneys late Wednesday.

On Thursday, county officials said they had been asked to keep the permit from view because of safety concerns.

    ... said so.

Speaking from experience here.  I and the people I worked with occasionally blab about targets and findings (e.g. "we helped catch so-and-so"), but we do not talk about sources & methods, period.

Klein is full of shit.  And his pal in Southern CA is a twice-convicted crook:  possession of meth-making equipment (he was a meth-cooker) and financial fraud (stolen Social Security checks).  He wasn't even a particularly smart crook: he was just another repeat-criminal, a nasty little scumball who deserved more than the two approx. 1-year sentences he got.

Here's to hoping that the web of civil fraud and other potential legal trouble (probation violations etc.) over this film at least manages to drain these peoples' bank accounts, and that of whoever funded them, and puts at least one of them behind bars.

    •  movie? what movie? (0+ / 0-)

      has anybody seen it?

what people have seen is a short you tube with obviously overdubbed voices.

They could have overdubbed a Mickey Mouse cartoon and posted it and avoided all the bullshit cover stories if all the original plan was just to cause a riot so as to get someone killed and have Romney be Jonny on the spot. Post a slide show of random Islamic images and read youtube/yahoo news story comments...hate is easy to 'produce'. The Romney stuff was just someone heard something and thought it was a great idea and opportunity..showing how stupid the whole Romney group is, for all to see.

What happened after this whatever and wherever and whoever it was converted it to a 'trailer'.....that is what's important: was it then pointed out to the right people in Egypt so as to  make sure to shit stir? Why bother?...unless you're tracking someone from the us to the mideast.
(Obviously Al Q latched on to the opportunity at some point..when and how would be the interesting parts. That part looks pretty planned out.)

Was the footage somehow 'found' or given to some Al Q operators or sympathizers by the FBI( following the players and their comms)..this could have been one path, and however convoluted, still could have been part  a larger Al Q op against the Embassy, reported elsewhere.  Klein and his ilk are useful idiots here. IMO.

A Cointelpro style undercover op with the FBI works in two ways, the paranoia is one important way to disrupt. The other is doing stuff that your infiltratee gets blamed for. It has a data gathering function and a political function.

What people have seen seems to be footage from some movie making that may or may not have ever been completed, that may or may not have ever been shown (doesn't sound like it was
), and seems like it was to be seen  as some well meaning hobby anti terrorist op or even, given the odd sentencing of the Patsy/Fall Guy some FBI op.

So maybe it was an FBI op, and by the time the movie got more 'done' but impossible to finish maybe the target shifted or the FBI decided these flakes and losers weren't going to finish it and went to Plan B which was to have a screening anyway and take photos of the angry customers, salvaging what they could and covering the loss and failure of the op.

The the footage sat around and was taken advantage of...or something. A hate group from the original cover story perhaps, a even a continuing fbi op..we won't know till someone write a book in 20 years or more.

      But movie? Big money? heh...

I don't think so ...I'm voting it was cover for some fbi op, cause no hobbyist like Klein would have the experience and patience to develop the cutouts and smoke and mirrors..altho Klein and his buddy ,maybe claim that type of experience..their mo seems more blunt force bluster at this point.

Well, it's all good fun til a lot of innocent people got killed, now somebody needs to be held accountable somehow.

Quick progress being made sussing this out...hoping for more.....and more justice.

( and due to the ODS let me add: no I certainly don't think PBO ordered the fbi to do this, anybody suggesting that or that I am saying that is an idiot, the fbi does all kinds of things PBO doesn't have much of anything to do with.. shocking I know...
However, expect Rush to claim this is all PBO's doing in 3...2...)

sry Geek, I'm rambling on...but an interesting story. No actual factualizing, just more speculatating.

FBI hasn't messed with these kinds of ops in decades.  They got burned too badly by what went on in the 60s - 70s.

Nowadays their method is to use broad-spectrum collection to find potential threats, and then zero in on the targets with undercover infiltration.  This makes for more solid cases, a track record of convictions, and little controversy.

        •  ok..but I changed my mind (0+ / 0-)

movie and military attack on Embassy coincidental only.

Sept 11 is the important date, attack best served then on a cultural level...but  think, why attack an alarmed and fully awake and staffed Embassy by  somehow having protestors already there looking and sounding threatening?

Better to send flowers, wine, and pizza.

So while the heinous movie is seriously damaging people all over, IMO the Embassy attack was Al Queda and likely would have happened anyway.

          my opinion also here...

I think we  all, well, me anyway and I'm not alone in this, heh, may have over imagined events : distracted by Romney's stupid premptive critique, mad twitchy by conservabots lying, and  crazed by the election weirdness to try to make associations where none may exist...and we aren't wrong to do so  despite site rules etc etc...there are bad people who organize to do bad stuff. All very understandable...but sometimes an Al Q attack is simply an AlQ attack.

          and now back to speculatin'...

As to the Romney camp sending the robot out so early, they would have maybe been ready for just such an event because it was sept 11 , and also doesn't preclude someone in the security establishment with a political opinion from offering possible inside information or other early warnings..etc...after all, iRomney's got Bolton and Senor and all the Bushies and their Stay Behind pals still in govt.

          •  no one had early intel on the embassy attack. (0+ / 0-)

If they had known anything was going to happen, Obama would have had a few dozen Marines on that compound to deal with the situation.  Everyone around here including Obama's harshest critics, would agree with me on that point.

              like that warning..

I'm not talking about Obama's response

c'mon Geek, there are many people at various levels in the us security establishment in the us and overseas with varied histories and agendas, I wasn't saying anybody in any higher position in the administration 'knew', of course they would have responded if they 'knew' or had info to suspect etc.

And do you actually think we didn't know about AlQ's #2's announcement as it happened? It didn't come from Time magazine or the LA Free Presses classified ads.
That announcement had to have caused some reaction, but where to react? We'd already be at high alert in the mideast and elsewhere..

No, as to Romney staff 'knowing' I am talking about info at a low level of certainty but passed outside to former bosses, future bosses and colleagues..basic human jibber jabber for fun and or profit. It's speculation about human (un) predictability.
That some of these people in government, in agencies with acronym names, in private contractors..they may have conflicting political loyalties..fuck, may have?!  do have...and it's a certain possibility that they could communicate to someone near the Romney camp, like I said, Bolton, Senor, et frkn cetera. It's risky, but so what?

And we'll never know, so never mind, be well,  gnite.
