I spent two week on the Mainland recently during both the Republican and Democratic conventions.  Most of the time I was surrounded by conservatives.  It was fun to blunt their Fox talking points but something strange occurred time and time again.

Almost to a man or woman, at some point they would say in a low, conspiracy laden voice, "Something is going to happen."

I asked a few times what was going to happen.  They had no idea but they were dead sure something was going to happen.

After thinking about it for a while I believe these people are scared to death.  Scared of the black man in the White House. Scared of brown people in the malls.  Scared of the 47%.  Scared of the present.  Scared of the future.  Scared of science.

They live in gated communities.  They live in remote areas where they've set up self contained environments and are prepared to defend them.  The own gun safes that are stuffed with weapons and ammunition.

It would be interesting to see what a psychologist would make of what appears to be mass hysteria.

I feel sorry them.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I fear for our President, especially if these nutjobs realize they have lost any chance of power in this country.

    I hope I am wrong.

a few weeks ago where a remote neighborhood sights a ufo floating overhead, then hysteria takes hold as all the lights go out.

talk of a monster like "the thing" taking over each neighbor like an "invasion of the body snatchers" clone.

then random houses' electricity and lights begin to flicker on and off. each neighbor starts screaming "SHE'S the monster!" "no, HE'S the monster!" pointing and screaming and throwing rocks.

then at the end the camera pans back to reveal the (actually real) UFO and aliens at the console, flicking the switches and saying "see how they react? throw them into darkness for a few hours, then sit back and watch the pattern..."

apocalypse-fantasy/'the hunger games' types. doomsday fetishists. goddamn vermin. enough of them, and we'll get a self-fulfilling prophecy. israel is obviously already in play, according to its leader. so is, of course, iran - but they are a bumbling petty thief in comparison to israel's military expertise.

it's like american yowling over the "cuban influence" or some such bullshit. hey, fuckheads, there is NOBODY in this hemisphere that is a danger to us.

nor, for that matter, any fucking body in the EASTERN hemisphere. even if we cut the military by half.

fucking do it, fucking cut the rich's tax cuts too. close their fucking loopholes. close the corporate fucking loopholes too.

also rescend "citizen's united" some way, some how, and instead of making the "would you like to donate $1 to the election fund" on your taxes, taking it off just make it MANDATORY.

and maybe, MAYBE we'll be a little closer to Democracy 2.0.

Of veiled threat I would be talking to the secret service.  Maybe a visit from the Feds will make them shit their pants and shut them the fuck up.  Have you noticed that Ted Nugent has kept allow profile since his chat with the Secret Service.
