Now that the dust has settled, pseu-Dem Wendy Rosen is out and primary runner-up John LaFerla is going to tackle a hopeless write-in campaign, teabag icon Andy Harris has bailed on the two scheduled candidate debates.
One was sponsored by the League of Women Voters. There was a time when you didn't diss them. So what's Andy thinking?
Instead, he will hold "town meetings." if they're like the last round, they will be a half-hour of a Doc Andy PowerPoint lecture followed by a few questions he'll spend 10 minutes answering ... By repeating talking points from the first half hour.
This is in line with his behavior so far, which consists of very short PR emails where he repeats anti-Obama talking points. He is an assiduous constituent ducker who's been unseen until the last couple months.
You have to wonder what he's more afraid of: voters, or a challenger.
In any event, two things would be great to see:
- maybe ex-MD-01 congressman Wayne Gilchrest will challenge Andy to a debate, now that our incumbent's schedule has been cleared.
- LaFerla ought to bring a nice chair and a picture of the incumbent to the debates.
Let's see some pointed political humor in this particular contest.
Clint Eastwood might have been talking to a fictional Invisible President, but people in the 1st District have a real invisible officeholder.
