I thought Elizabeth Warren did very well at the debate --- very strong on jobs, taxes and women's issues. And Brown approached but did not quite reach "Rick Lazio getting in Hillary's face" status.
However, what Adlai Steven said nearly 55 years ago is unfortunately still true in Massachussets:
"Governor, every thinking person will be voting for you." Stevenson replied, "Madam, that is not enough. I need a majority."
Therefore, there are three things she needs to work on for the next debate:
1. Native-American Heritage: Although her answer to the Native-American accusation was strong, she needs to give some answer as to her personnel records. It may be that they can't be released. I may be that they are irrelevant because Harvard confirmed that she received no preference. Or it may be something else. The whole thing is bullshit, but it should not be left hanging out there.
2. Asbestos Representation: He went on and on about the poor asbestos plaintiffs, and she simply denied it and said she'd defended victims. She needs to develop a very crisp response -- not easy, because it's a complex issue in which her client apparently reneged on the deal she had made.
Also, there's a good chance that Brown at some point advocated or voted for tort reform, which in its advanced form would foreclose plaintiffs like asbestos victims much more than Warren's representation of Travelers. He also has probably voted for or advocated relaxing of insurance regulations or some other bill that made it harder for tort victims to sue or recover.
If that's true, she could say, "Mr. Brown, First, the accusation about Travelers is simply untrue, as the Boston Globe has said. Second, in that case I was representing a client -- doing a job. What you did in voting for XXXX was try to take away millions of victims' right to sue." This would fit in with her emphasis on Brown's votes.
3. Tying Brown tightly to Republicans: Her answer concerning climate change and Inhofe was great, so she should do that right out of the gate. "Sen. Brown is a Republican. He will vote for Mitch McConnell for majority leader, the Republican who said his 'main goal is to make Barack Obama a one term President.' He would even vote for tea party leader Jim DeMint if DeMint he runs for majority leader. Did you know that DeMint believes gays should not be allowed to teach? [or some other DeMint outrage]
To Brown's "You're not running against Sen. Inhofe, you're running against me," she might say, "I am running against every Senate Republican and their terrible policies that have held us back. You want to make Inhofe, DeMint and [others] chairman of committees that will dramatically affect our lives."
She was good on Obama's foreign policy, but I would say "Sen. Brown wants Mitt Romney to replace Barack Obama as Commander in Chief. I don't think most people in Massachusetts want that."
