The Golden Dawn, a greek fascist party best known in the US for the attack on a rival party's meber on live television, has opened an office in New York City.

Greece's ultra-nationalist party Golden Dawn (Chrysi Avgi) has inaugurated a new office in New York City, to reach out to the Greek diaspora. A branch of the political party is already operational in Melbourne, Australia.
The rise of Golden Dawn is an extremely disturbing development in Greece.  Especially given the rise in racist attacks.  And those attacks aren't just limited to individuals.  There was a race riot in Aitoliko in August.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

The revolution will not be televised. But it will be blogged, a lot. Probably more so than is necessary.

  •  these guys sound like they're a hop and skip away (7+ / 0-)

from being on those Gov't terror watch/shit lists.

I mean they're basically Neo-Nazis and they wanna "liberate" Constantinople. Yeah, feel free to do a double take at that last part lol. Good luck winning over everyday Greek-Americans, assholes.

  •  just for once, I want to see the balance of.... (5+ / 0-)

.... comments here spend more words on how reprehensible these neo-Nazis are, rather than on their free speech rights to go spouting Naziism.

Very often we as progressives spend more verbiage on defending the free speech rights of monsters, than on condemning them for being monsters.

Yeah we get it: in America you have the right to have a Nazi rally around a Synagogue, including signs that say "Kill All the Jews" and "Hitler was Right," and including mock-ups of gas chambers.   You also have the right to pick your nose at the dinner table in a restaurant, fart copiously in a crowded elevator, call black folks "boy," and generally be obnoxious, rude, and disgusting.

But it's high time to shift the balance and start emphasizing that monsters are monsters, regardless of their "rights" to be monsters.

So what I'd like to see are protests outside the office of this group, calling attention to the fact that its leadership in Greece goes so far as to have Nazi symbols and paraphernalia in its headquarters, and that they have brown-shirt thugs who beat people up, and all the rest of it.  There should be a consistent vigil or informational picket outside their office, making it very clear exactly what this group is about.  And there should be a chant of "shame! shame!" every time someone goes into or out of that office.

Make it hot for them.  Make it uncomfortable.  Make them unpopular, and make them pariahs.  Because in the end, that's our right too.

"Minus two votes for the Democrat" equals "plus one vote for the Republican." Arithmetic doesn't care about your feelings.

those protests right now.  I'm trying to get the word out among the new yorkers I know to push them to get out there.

And I totally agree.  We all know they have free speech, you don't need to tell me.  You can denounce them as dangerous assholes though.

  •  Election polling (4+ / 0-)

indicated that about 50% of Greek voters who identified as members of the military or the police cast their votes for Golden Dawn.

Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?

They even have advertisements on youtube with scary music:

Seriously guys? Unironically using scary music?

These guys are pathetic. Let's monitor the situation, but I don't know about protesting them just yet.

I don't want to give them any attention. A protest might just be free advertising for these assholes.
