Sean Patrick Maloney
O2B Questionnaire

The 25 seats Democrats need to put the gavel back in Nancy Pelosi's hands is daunting, but the goal is looking more and more attainable every single day. Take this, for example. Democrat Sean Patrick Maloney is giving freshman tea partier Nan Hayworth a scare in New York's newly drawn 18th congressional district.

PPP just polled the race for the AFL-CIO and found it all tied up at 43. That's after a much less optimistic poll by Siena last week, written up by Daily Kos Elections, where "Working Families Party placeholder Larry Weissmann scoring 10% of the vote." The AFL's press release says that they "assume that the election is a two candidate race." Cook Political Report calls this one a tossup.

Goal ThermometerMaloney served as a senior adviser in President Bill Clinton’s White House, which explains how he got President Clinton's endorsement. He's been a businessman, and he's served in the administrations of two Democratic governors of New York. He's openly, proudly gay, making his family with his partner of 20 years, Randy Florke, a part of his campaign.

Sean and his husband have been together for 20 years and they have three wonderful children. His family is central to his campaign. Not just to promote LGBT equality—which he does—but to connect with average voters concerned about education and the economy.
On those key issues, you can read his answers to our Orange to Blue questionnaire. Maloney's a solid progressive.

And Nan Hayworth? A pretty typical tea party Republican, a woman and a physician (well, like Rand Paul, an opthamologist—what is it about them?) who voted with the Republican majority to defund Planned Parenthood, to end Medicare, to repeal Obamacare. She's a typical tea party warrior against women. And she's in danger.

Let's get rid of one more tea party incumbent.

Please welcome Sean Maloney with a $3 donation.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
