More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

In case you're in state, wondering where to catch the show.  It should be a good one.  Baldwin hit it out of the park at the convention and Thompson's been holed up in a secluded bunker somewhere since the primary.

Does not lack ego, that one.  He takes credit for Badgercare.  Nice to know.  Now I know to stop calling that broken, barrier to health care, mean, rotten system Walkercare and start calling it Tommycare

          •  My children have to be on Badgercare (0+ / 0-)

Because my husband had a stroke and lost his job and his insurance.   There is no private insurance available in WI.
For the first few months, signing up for Badgercare was a complete hassle.  They would send letters saying my children were kicked off.

In order to get them back on I had to call a phone number where you wait on hold for the better part of an hour.  Then I am told they need more information, a payment, etc.  I ask why they cannot simply send a letter asking for that information and they say there is no such letter.
Then that letter actually comes in the mail

The system is run through private HMO's, all of which have a different phone number for dental, vision, etc.  I sometimes have to call one phone number wait on hold a half hour only to be told to call another phone number.

I have repeatedly emailed the state asking if there is anyone with a voice mail, email, any way of communicating that is modern and less time consuming. NO

I tried to make a vision appt for my children.  I had to go through two phone numbers.  Of course there is only one provider per city for stuff like dental, vision, etc.  In fact there is no provider in our city for prompt care.  I also notified the state and they said there is nothing they can do about that.  So there is only one provider that takes Tommycare in Racine.  I asked if I could make an appt for the Christmas break so my kids would not have to miss school.  They said they could not make an appt that far in advance.  So I asked for the number of the provider and they said I cannot directly make the appt myself

The next day I tried calling back to make a sooner appt and nobody answered the phone at all.  It was just a busy signal.  So I ended up having to make a vision appt and pay out of pocket because I am unable to get a hold of them to do it.  We can afford it but I imagine some people can not.  Just like some people cannot travel to Kenosha for prompt care.

It seems the system is designed to discourage people from using it  Sorry this is long but this is a nightmare I have been living with for months

            •  oops (0+ / 0-)

meant to say there is no private insurance for kids only available in WI.  I found only one, but there were $50 dollars copays, no mental health and other limitations that made it basically a non insurance

I don't know of a Medicaid program that is.  My family and I are on BadgerCare too.  Scott Walker has done some significant damage to the administration of the system.  I used to go to a Kenosha County office 20 minutes from home for our annual review, but now it's all done through the mail.  The offices have been consolidated and now Racine County administers our case.  I experienced the second party appointment process when getting my eyes checked, but in the end my glasses cost $5.

BadgerCare has provided me with more medical and dental care in the few years I've been on it than I received during the interim after my discharge from the Marines...  and at a very minimal cost.  I pay $3 to see my doctor, $1.50 for each prescription, and nothing for my dental work.

I know the run around is frustrating.  It's designed to make you give up.  The case worker's job seems to be to get the recipient off the rolls.  That's the way it is with all Medicaid programs.  It's my understanding that BadgerCare is the best program of it's kind in the country.  BadgerCare expands coverage above and beyond the minimum requirements of Federal Law.

BadgerCare has it's flaws, but without it my family couldn't survive.

It is sad we have to go through all this to get health care.  My husband gets a pension which puts us in the higher premium kind of Badgercare where we have to pay for dental, eyeglasses (we only get a portion of the exam covered) plus $200.00 per month.

Everytime someone tells me to call the consortium I cringe.
I shudder to think what other medicaid is like if this is the best.  I only hope that when the exchanges are set up we can buy something for the kids.  As it is with a $15 copay and my daughter in PT its not really the best.

I know that in other states our income would probably leave them uninsured entirely, so Walkercare does provide for something.  I don't know what kind of people they hire to harrass and make things difficult for us.  But surviving the hell of a life changing illness is bad enough, then to be punished for needing healthcare on top of it..  Did I mention my husband's stroke was due to malpractice?  But you cant sue doctors in WI either.

Guess I am still bitter for having all of this done to us and being slapped in the face repeatedly by Badgercare doesnt help my disposition at all. I wonder if Walker had not stolen the recall would it be better under Barrett?  I hope for your family too it gets better.  We should not be treated like dirt for being in our circumstances.

    •  i thought kerrey and thompson were better (0+ / 0-)

      than fisher and baldwin.

both fisher and baldwin seemed to take a very conservative approach to the debates.  they generally gave bland canned answers and were more repetitive, whereas thompson and kerrey were more specific and authoritative on most subjects.

probably it was b/c fisher and baldwin are leading, so they wanted to take no risks, and also b/c kerrey and thompson are a lot more experienced and are probably more relaxed generally b/c they have been outside politics for several years.

by Baldwin to the Thompson video regarding Medicare and MedicAid. I think she should have gone nuts on it. Also, she let Thompson get away from his schizoid private/government identity. He attacked her fairly hard. She refused to engage. Risky at best. I thought it appeared rather weak, actually, but then I'm all in favor of going for the jugular in debates. :)

Kerrey had some strange comments, but I believe both he and Tammy Baldwin won. I can understand why Baldwin is having such a tough race tho. She's got a tough opponent, and she wasn't ready to take him on.

    •  I listened locally on WPR and that was my (4+ / 0-)

impression too.    Baldwin did score a few points on the Medicare D funding and Thompson's desire to gut Medicare, but overall she seemed a bit weak and repetitive - especially in regards to her grandparent's Social Security.   I doubt that debate changed anyone's mind.

And I'm saying that as someone who went to school with her and strongly supports her.   She's vastly better in person than in that debate format.

...earlier this year. Having watched this video of that debate a couple of days before the June 5 recall elections in Wisconsin, both Scott Fitzgerald and Lori Compas were much better debaters than I thought they would be. In the first WI-Sen debate, both Tommy Thompson and Tammy Baldwin were worse debaters than I thought they would be. Thompson came across as a seemingly-intoxicated jerk who is a shadow of his former self, and Baldwin seemed nervous at times.
