After watching the Kerrey/Fischer NE Senate debate on C-SPAN I have come to the following conclusion:

Deb Fischer is the devil.

I have never seen a more vapid, condescending, meaningless performance, met with reasoning, logic and fact and responding with yet more vapidity, meaninglessness and condescension.  It is like someone took Sarah Palin, removed her personality, and replaced it with a grotesque caricature of Michelle Bachmann on valium.

The fact that Deb Fischer is somehow and in some way running 20 pts ahead of a decorated war veteran with years of public and private sector experience is pure insanity, I don't care how red the state is.

That is all.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

With a streak of egalitarianism and neighborliness.  How did Nebraska move to the dark side? (Reminding ourselves that it's still not Kansas--yet)

Though there is a kernel of truth.  Conagra has its HQ in NE and their are a variety of other large Agri- and Agri-dependent businesses that would vehemently oppose more oversight and fewer handouts.

The small farmer is nearly extinct--though astro-turfing in his or her name lives on.

  •  So who "won" the debate? (0+ / 0-)

Not that it matters...  unless of course you mean Fischer came off like such a devil that Kerrey could mount a comeback now?

    •  Kerrey won all 3 debates (10+ / 0-)

But this was hands down his best performance. I know a lot of people on DKos don't get the weirdness that is Nebraska politics, but Kerrey is much more progressive than many people give him credit for and Fischer is an empty suit tea partier incapable of saying anything that is not a Norquist/Rove/Koch approved soundbite.

Also, this race is much closer than the national pundits would have you believe which is why Fischer has stayed negative for so long. Both sides internals have this at 5 or 6 points apart, but if you believe that Kerrey was actually down by 25 a month ago, then down 10 last week as the Omaha World Herald reported, then that shows 1) a huge gap elimination and 2) momentum for Kerrey.

      •  The tough thing for Kerrey I'm assuming is.... (0+ / 0-)

...he cannot ride Obama's coattails if Obama campaigns with him since it will likely hurt him in such red a state?

How are the ad wars going over there?  Man this is another one of those seats that if we keep I will be so pleasantly shocked.  You're right, national pundits and all the polls definitely have kept this seat off my radar.

It's one of the sad parts of Nebraska politics. Few pro-Obama pockets exist in the eastern part of the state, so Kerrey can't really move towards Obama the same way Reid did in Nevada two years ago.

Fischer has been solidly negative since June or July. Kerrey really hasn't gone negative yet, which IMO is a mistake. Fischer's name ID is still very low in the state, so the opportunity to define her still exists even this late in the cycle.

          •  Gah... really?? (0+ / 0-)

Isn't Politics 101 "Define your Opponent if Nobody Knows Who He or She is Before They Have a Chance to?"  I would have thought since Kerrey's a known quantity in the state that his campaign team would be focusing on going negative on whoever his opponent was going to be...  Agh.  Disappointing.

She grazes on BLM land, cost her about $11.00 month for every cow and calf unit. She is a hypocrite wanting to balance the budget by getting rid of Obamacare and gutting the social safety net, while happily letting BLM leases staying obscenely low.

      •  Kerrey did win all 3 (3+ / 0-)

and how any person with above 5th grade IQ could vote for Fischer is beyond me. Kerrey has a progressive record as governor and senator but didn't pass the Kos purity test so no love on this board. Fischer would make Akin look like an Oxford scholar. Kerrey would be light years better than Nelson. I gave twice to Kerrey and will do so again. I urge others to give a few dollars to this winnable race.

It'd be sweet if the NE-01 that may go for Obama pulls Kerrey over the top and gives him a slim victory.

I actually think Akin, for all his idiocy, has a better grasp of the issues than Fischer.

I can't remember when I've had such a visceral negative response to a politician.

    •  That would be NE-02 (0+ / 0-)

you're referring to. NE-01 is the Lincoln area, state capital, Fortenberry country although there ARE liberals here. NE-02 is the Omaha area, incumbent R is Lee Terry with challenger Ewing-D who seems like a pretty good guy--we'll see if Obama coattails in this district help us take that seat.

I don't know if Kerry can win...I think Nebraskans are tired of him. Like turkey leftovers, 10 days after Thanksgiving. Personally I will vote for him because he's a Dem, obviously, and also because he's pro-choice and vehemently, firmly against a war with Iran. Both of those issues are important. The crap he spouts about Social Security makes me furious but what the hell.

I love it that Obama's channeling Harry Truman: "I don't give 'em hell; I just tell the truth and they think it's hell!"

because I just can't keep up the rage without hurting my health. However, when the Obama campaign called the other day about volunteers, I told them I would be devoting any time I have to the Kerrey campaign.

I hope to find a few hours in the next few weekends for making phone calls.
