I have seen a lot of elections by this point in my life. Let me tell you, campaigning for Michael Dukakis while living in San Diego was NOT FUN! We KNEW we were fighting a losing battle, but we fought it anyway.
This year we are probably fighting a winning battle...the question is HOW winning. There remains a chance the very unpopular Romney can pull off a win against the more popular Obama, but I really don't think so. The real fight is for Senate, House and Governorships...not to mention state legislatures, etc.
The media has been right wing biased (all Greedy Oil Party claims to the contrary) as long as I can remember. Sure individual reporters have tended to be liberal, but the company policies are decidedly right wing and they spin EVERY SINGLE NEWS STORY towards the right. Same goes for the horse race view of elections. If Romney is one point ahead he is winning. If Obama is 5 points ahead it is tied. Enough said.
Stop worrying about the media and the polls. What wins elections is money, voters, and effort.
Forget the polls and media. There is one and only one thing you should care about right now: GET OUT THE VOTE!
In every district of every state, GET OUT THE VOTE!
For President Obama, one of the best presidents of MY lifetime, GET OUT THE VOTE!
For the Senate and House, GET OUT THE VOTE!
For your state legislature and Governor, GET OUT THE VOTE!
And, way too often overlooked, for local races like judicial races, school board, Port Authority, etc. GET OUT THAT DAMNED VOTE!
That is all you should be talking about, folks, is strategy and tactics to get out the vote. I don't care what pundit X said about Romney's smile or Pundit Y said about Obama losing the debate. Let Obama worry about the debates. You and I should worry about getting out that damned vote.
Now here are my suggestions. Please donate time or money to at least one (or find your own local efforts to get involved with...I can make suggestions for NYC folks if they contact me).
Actions below the jump. But first a few reminders of what we are fighting for:
Now get out there and FIGHT for what you believe in!
Now here are some suggestions for what to donate to and what to do.
Phone bank right from home:
Make phone calls through Democracy for America to support Progressive candidates
On Oct. 13-14 Join or Host a Moveon.org Phone Party to Get Out the Vote
Or just volunteer through the Obama campaign.
Can't spare the time? Then give some cash:
Donate to help Democrats retake the House
Donate to help Democrats keep the Senate
Get local and support the excellent Progressive Majority endorsed candidates of 2012
Get liberal and support the excellent Democracy for America endorsed candidates of 2012.
Donate to win the key swing state of New Hampshire! (be the first to donate! The House, Presidency and Governorship are up for grabs here)
Donate to win critical races in the states the Presidential and VP candidates come from: Wisconsin, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Delaware.
Those are my suggestions. But the key thing is to stop caring about putrid polls and pundits pontificating. Get off your butt and DO SOMETHING:
Get active so that after November it will still be a sunny day on Sesame Street. Sweep away those right wing Republican clouds!
