In the last Presidential Debate, the President failed on many levels.  He didn't challenge Mitt Romney. He let Romney drift to the center by lying.  He lacked passion.

One issue that the President failed to bring up was Women's Rights, the war on contraception, etc.  Tonight should be the opportunity to do so.  In fact, this is THE opportunity.  The next debate will be about Foreign Policy... so tonight is the night.  A town hall is perfect to do this. Real voters will ask questions. There will be women there to connect with.

The Key (to me) is to get Mitt to repeat

"I think I've said time and again that I'm a pro-life candidate and I'll be a pro-life president. The actions I'll take immediately is to remove funding for Planned Parenthood."

Now, Mitt may try to retreat from that, as he likes to dance around the issues.  But he said that line just 6 days ago.  Remember how the Susan Komen For the Cure was ripped for cutting Planned Parenthood funding?  Remember how Planned Parenthood's donations surged and Komen's plummeted?  The end result, as we know, is that Komen backtracked.  The reason for this is that Planned Parenthood matters and is popular.

The "gender gap" isn't a political ploy.. it is real and exists because Republicans have onerous policies that hurt women.  The President can remind women that Planned Parenthood provides "primary care" services to women and need. It provides cancer screening.  It provides contraception.

In my mind, the Sesame Street contorversy was the wrong fight to pick.  Problem is, Obama didn't create an opening in the last debate to expose Mitt's harmful policies to women, so he had to run around the country speaking of Big Bird and Elmo, rather than contraception, equal pay, freedom of choice, and more important issues to women

Anyhow, Mr. President, please use tonight to remind the Americans why you must be President.  Don't let Mitt dodge the issues or lie.  Make us proud.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  This is stump speech material for him (0+ / 0-)

    He'll repeat it.

He'll frame it as "We shouldn't be borrowing money from China in order to...."  or "This is something that the States should handle themselves" or "People can make up their own minds on these issues, but this is not something that tax payer's dollars should be...."

I don't think he'll dance much on this.

    •  Maybe, but nonetheless, it is an unpopular view (0+ / 0-)

and Romney is so unpredicatbale, who knows what he will say.  There are no consequences for lying (it seems) so he may choose to lie about planned parenthood to score political points in the post-debate analysis.

  •  Women's rights. (1+ / 0-)

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan believe Big Government should decide what a woman can or can't do with her own body.

President Obama, and Joe Biden both believe it is up to the woman to decide what she does with her own body, not big government.

This is how you win an election.

Even Republican women take President Obama's side when they are asked this simple question.

"Do you feel you, or the government should decide what you do with your own body"

A very tiny amount of women are going to actually vote against women's rights once they are in private, and cast their vote.  What they say in public is another matter.

Is to show how the economy is improving firstly...the unemployment rate has dropped below 8% and he has created over 5.2 million jobs.  States like Ohio and Michigan have received the benefits of saving GM.  Their unemployment rates have declined.  If you give me 4 more years we will exceed this growth rate with another 12 million jobs.

Planned parenthood is a great and important issue but not the most important.  The President has to appeal to a wider audience to get re-elected.

This debate is about re-setting the discussion, improving the President's image and building momentum to win the election in the Battle Ground States...whose number one issue is the economy.

  •  Planned Parenthood is the issue. (0+ / 0-)

I posted as much in another diary about an hour ago.

Obama needs to be prepared to quote the locations and dates when Romney said he'd defund it.  Be specific and don't let Romney hedge.

Then pivot to the larger narrative of other republican anti-women's issues.

  •  Obama's mission is to connect (1+ / 0-)
    Recommended by:

with the people in the town hall and to connect with the people watching at home.  Planned Parenthood if it comes up will be a bonus.

  •  Tonights mission: Romney's character (1+ / 0-)
    Recommended by:

Everybody knows the numbers and policy details, and those who don't won't be swayed by wonky stuff.

This debate is about Romney's character, he is not a friend of the middle class.  Every answer Obama gives has to be wrapped in the 47% comment, Bain, what he did in Mass.

If Obama can't drive down Romney's favorables, he loses.

  •  They key is that? Really?? I don't think so. (0+ / 0-)

The KEY, is to show Romney as the dissembling arrogant person he is.

The KEY is to draw the actual contrast between what Romney would do, vs. the things Romney says.

They KEY is not an admission about Planned Parenthood. The nation is not going to go "Well, that's that, he's against planned parenthood, this is so over."

The KEY is much bigger and more important than that.

The real KEY things to be done are not difficult to do. President Obama, intentionally or not (no 11th dimensional chess please), lowered the bar with he first debate by playing polite and obsequious.

If Obama will simply call Romney out on his lies, the debates are over and the KEY will have been turned.
