as governor that he decided not run for reelection.
He was down in the polls against EVERY Democratic candidate.
A new University of Massachusetts poll shows Governor Mitt Romney (R) trailing any of his potential 2006 re-election opponents. Romney trails Attorney General Tom Reilly — the Dem frontrunner — by 15%. Secretary of State Bill Galvin and former USDOJ official Deval Patrick (D), by contrast, only leads Romney by single-digits. However, if Romney passes on the race to focus on a likely 2008 Presidential campaign, GOP chances of holding the Governor’s Mansion fade even further. The poll showed Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey (R) trails any of the Dems by wider margins than Romney. Healey trails Reilly by 25%, trails Galvin by 13%, and trails Patrick by 4%.
Deval Patrick ended up winning the Governorship. Prior to Governor Patrick, Massachusetts had
16 straight years of Republican governors. When Mitt saw the handwriting on the wall, he attempted to pass the torch to Republican Kerry Healy, but that didn’t pan out. Patrick won and is in his second term now.
Those “binders full of women” that Mitt claimed in last night's debate to pursue after the election actually came from the Massachusetts Government Appointments Project. MassGAP started assembling applicants (in Binders) before the election to present potential hires to whichever candidate won the election.
Seems that Romney did use the “Binders” to find some women initially, BUT, not surprisingly,
by the end of his term, the number of women in high-ranking positions was slightly lower than it was before Romney took office.
I watched the CNN independent women voters after the Presidential Debate last night who claimed that they were
so impressed with Mitts performance as governor in Massachusetts and were
so impressed with his efforts to hire women after the election. I knew it rang hollow and decided to look into it.
I wasn’t at all surprised that Romney never did what he said about the “Binders” and wasn’t at all surprised that Romney was (and still is) so unpopular in his home state that Nate Silver has Romney’s chance of winning in Massachusetts today at .1%.
Come on! If Romney did such a good job being governor of Massachusetts, why was he and why is he still so unpopular there?
