There are a number of things I took away from Joseph Heller’s book, Catch-22, which I last read literally nearly four decades ago. The item from the book I want to mention tonight took place in a party held, I believe, in an officer’s club. Yossarian was walking around the party, and he mentioned to another officer the rumor he’d recently heard about a new secret weapon being employed by the Nazis. It was a 344 mm LePage glue gun, and it would glue an entire formation of planes together in mid-air! A bit later in the evening, the rumor, having made the rounds of the room, finally got back to Yossarian, himself. ‘My God! It’s true!’ Now that he had ‘confirmation’ from ‘another source.’ ::wink::
In that vein, then ...
There is a movement afoot in the state of South Carolina to have the ballots altered prior to the general election. Conservatives in the state have strong objections to the Republican nominee. We interviewed South Carolina Republican-At_Large (accent on the ‘LARGE!’), Rush Flambeaux, about this ballotory conundrum.

“That dickhead (meaning the Republican nominee, Mitt Romney) only got a fraction of the vote in South Carolina (27%), and after the way he threw our honorable Tea Party constituents under the bus in the first debate, if the primary were held today, he wouldn’t get more than a fraction of what he got the first time.
“While all of the Democratic stories on the issue are the most egregious lies, the fact is that Romney’s position isn’t a position at all, it is a spectrum, and on every issue. He is for and against everything, depending on the audience before him.
“He’s against Obamacare, he is for socialistic health care, he is against abortion, he is for a woman’s right to choose, he wants to help the middle class, he wants to screw them for being the lazy irresponsible screwups they are, no governmental funding for public education, let those slackers be as ignorant as we know them to be, then he wants to support public education ... it goes on and on.
“He has this way of looking sincere when talking out of both sides of his mouth, as Gingrich properly explained. I know who he is much less than I did four years ago, when he withdrew from the primaries before he could be perceived as being thumped by McCain. It’s a genuine concern that he might withdraw from this race rather than let Obama thump him this time. The only reason we think he will continue is, his lust for power, for feeding his ego, is so overwhelming, we believe he’ll continue, rather than trying to run again in 2016, when he’s less well known than he is now.
“Our polling clearly indicates that Romney does better, when his name isn’t mentioned in any way in connection with this election. As we have eliminated xxxxxx W. xxxx (President, United States of America, 2000-2008) from all campaign discussions, we’ve eliminated ... this guy, from all campaign initiatives, including all political ads, nationwide. He just doesn’t have anything to contribute, and our numbers go down whenever he appears or is mentioned or thought of.
“This election is not about Romney, however. It is about removing Obama from office as soon as possible. For this reason, we are petitioning the State Election Commission to change the ballots used in the election to the following:
Barack Obama, Democrat
Other, Republican
On to tonight’s comments! Provided most professionally and thoroughly by brillig! Thanks for visiting!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything
without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do
not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
From mamkotke, just after last night's deadline:
Cassandra Waites makes a thought-provoking point about comparing outcomes for one- and two-parent families.
From Melanie in IA:
Floja Roja brought us a fantastic Tagg Tweet.
From tonight's host:
I liked this comment from Loquatrix for focusing on Republicans embracing unequal pay for women.
This is a Tip Jar comment from VeloVixen I picked largely because of her fine diary about a fine young cancer survivor named Alex Oden.
(The diary is worth reading, too!)
