I don't donate money to political campaigns, but I've subscribed to Dick Durbin's fundraising e-mail, and the latest e-mail from Durbin is a classic, to say the least:
Your attention please! "Dr." Todd Akin announces a new professional colleague: Joe Walsh (R-IL).
If you missed it -- after Thursday night's debate with congressional candidate Tammy Duckworth (IL-8), her blustering Tea Party opponent, Congressman Joe Walsh, made some incredible Todd Akin-esque comments.
Walsh believes that abortion should be illegal under all circumstances -- with no exceptions for rape, incest, or when the life of the mother is at stake. And here's his latest justification: According to Walsh, thanks to modern science and technology, there are "never" -- repeat never -- instances in which a woman’s health or life is at risk during pregnancy -- a declaration completely inconsistent with medical science and human experience.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists categorically rejected Walsh's assertion yesterday. But that won't slow him down.
Walsh was one of the first Republicans to rush to Todd Akin's defense during the infamously offensive "legitimate rape" mess -- so it's no surprise that Walsh and Akin share this ignorance.
We've got to make sure Tammy defeats this guy.
Durbin's fundraising e-mail in support of Tammy Duckworth's IL-8 campaign against Tea Party loudmouth Joe Walsh is promoting
this one-day moneybomb by the Duckworth campaign.
Walsh, after a debate against Duckworth on Thursday night, told reporters that abortion is never necessary to save the life of the mother:
With modern technology and science, you can’t find one instance…There’s no such exception as life of the mother. And as far as health of the mother, same thing, with advances in science and technology, health of the mother has become a tool for abortions anytime under any reason.
Walsh's claim is blatantly false, in fact, the pregnancy-related mortality rate, which currently stands at 15.1 deaths per 100,000 live births, has actually increased in the United States in recent years. Given the fact that
Walsh publicly defended Akin after Akin falsely claimed that victims of "legitimate rape" rarely get pregnant because "the female body has ways to shut that whole thing down", it's no surprise that Durbin would tie Walsh to Akin in his fundraising e-mail supporting Duckworth.
