It was announced last Friday that Fox News chairman Roger Ailes has renewed his contract with News Corp. through 2016 making it a certainty that Fox News will remain unfair and not only unbalanced but completely unhinged for the foreseeable future.

In a lucrative deal that is rumored to be upwards of $30 million dollars, the new contract would provide a bloated raise for Ailes who reported earnings last year of $21 million. If that sounds like a lot of money to you, consider the fact that he has solidified his role as Republican kingmaker wielding far more influence within the GOP than that little dung beetle Reince Priebus over at the Republican National Committee. Thirty mil seems like a bargain to garble as many minds as Fox News has. As Forbes notes, "That bit about Ailes being the most powerful man in America was a joke, but not by much." If it is unclear to you just how large a role he plays in American politics, one need only sit down for a chat with their looney Fox News watching Great Uncle Cooter and let him regale you with all the truth he has learned at the knee of the most shameless propaganda machine the world has ever known.
The scandals currently sweeping through News Corp. that have been dogging the chain of command right up to the scurrilous Rupert Murdoch have only strengthened Ailes' reigns of power. As of yet, Ailes remains completely unscathed by the investigations, leaving him a very important spider in Murdoch's web. Should the damage to News Corp. oversees crumble Murdoch's presence there, his Fox News Channel will likely survive and probably continue to thrive here under Ailes' odious leadership.
Ailes is now 72 years old and has only half-heartedly considered retirement. If you think his reign may end when his contract is up in 2016, consider the fact that Rupert Murdoch is now 81 and seems to grow only more hungry for dominance as he rots away in his own skin. Greed, power, and right wing politics seem to be great ingredients for longevity. Sort of like yogurt only with more bile.
I'll leave you with this quote from David Frum made in 2010 during a moment of rare honesty concerning the impact of Fox News on American politics.
Republicans originally thought that Fox worked for us, and now we are discovering we work for Fox.
Thank you for that admission, David. The question is, will your party ever step up and do anything about it? I'm not holding my breath. You all seem quite content snuggled up together there in bed.
Now on to the Tops!

Thanks to tonight's Top Comments contributors! Let us hear from YOU
when you find that proficient comment.
From Dave in Northridge:
nanorich makes a very important point in the obituary Meteor Blades prepared for George McGovern.
From BeninSC:
As a Puddytat fan, I deeply appreciated the comment posted late last night in my Top Comments diary, in which she characterizes the elderly voting Republican as tantamount to going out to buy the bullets to be used in their execution. Great analogy, Puddytat!
And from your diarist, Steveningen:
I'm nominating two people and an entire thread tonight. In Grizzard's diary Clemson Fans Boo the POTUS on Military Appreciation Day today there was a lot of discussion about the deeply red states today. Some of it was fairly contentious. But this exchange between BeninSC and FrY10cK was as spirited and productive as any I've read on Daily Kos. Disagreements here are the nature of the orange beast. It's how we handle our disagreements that matter.
