Has Mitt Effectively Given Up??? I mean, sure he wants to be president, but...
I wrote a diary a few weeks ago speculating about Mitt’s general level of disinterest in campaigning, his limited number of campaign stops, and his lack of hard work on the trail. I felt that Mitt was running his campaign the way he does everything: ie: minimal work, and let his money (in this case, the SuperPac money) do the heavy lifting for him. I speculated as to how in the hell he was going to debate President Obama, and thought that he would either be thin-skinned and have a “where’s the outrage” Bob Dole moment, or that he would just sit there and look as disinterested as he really is.
The first debate kind of shoved my meme (ouch, that doesn’t sound pleasant) onto the backburner. However, the 3rd debate, last night, has re-energized my meme. I truly think Mitt likes the idea of being president, but just so he can put it on his resume, AND get richer.
He doesn’t really want to work at it, and thus he doesn’t REALLY want it.
I remember former NFL coach Buddy Ryan pointed out that everybody loves to win. But there are very few who truly hate to lose, and very few who truly love to prepare to win. I don’t think Mitt really wants it at this point, and sure he will fight for the presidency (he is running, after all), but now that the debates are over, he just doesn’t have to fight that hard.
Why quit just 2 weeks from the finish line? Well, part of that is human nature, and part of it is that Mitt sucks at foreign policy anyway, and he knows it. Thus, it was quite convenient for him to kind of sort of concede last night’s debate to President Obama. This became an even easier decision for Mitt the moment Obama opened the debate by aggressively giving Mitt a hard two-hand shove to the chest with his first remarks. That took the little bit of fight Mitt came with, and drained it out right of the challenger.
Even their faces afterward showed a bit of relief. Once you make a hard decision, and you are resigned to a certain fate, the ride out to the end of the process or the end of the tenure is the easy part. The smiles on the faces of Mitt and Ann immediately after the debate told me this. Ann was even a bit gracious and respectful of President Obama. She knows how hard the president’s job is. She was happy last night. Mitt was more relaxed. He’s done.
I predict we will see a more relaxed and happier Mitt as the race winds down. He will say it is because he is winning, but it is really because Mitt knows he has actually lost.
This only means we need to fight hard right to the end. LOSING IS NOT AN OPTION!! Click and tear Ayn/Mitt/Ryan/GOP/Fox News new orifices!!! ALL (100%) royalties from Aldus Shrugged are donated straight to Obama and to downballot Dems.
