Several voters in Florida got an unwelcome surprise in their mailboxes recently--official-looking letters saying that they may not be eligible to vote. There's one problem--they aren't real.
The letter says the Florida Division of Elections has provided information about the recipients' citizenship status, and that "registering to vote under fraudulent conditions or swearing a false oath are both third-degree felonies in Florida."
The mailing asks recipients to bring original documents proving citizenship to their elections office, and also included a "Voter Eligibility Form" asking for personal information.
Voters in at least 23 counties have gotten these letters. Now here's an interesting twist--most of them are registered
Republicans! For instance, nine voters in Brevard, Osceola, Orange and Seminole counties in central Florida have gotten these letters--and all of them are Republicans.
Since the letters were postmarked from Seattle, both the FBI and state officials are investigating. Regardless of whose side the perp is on, he or she needs to have the library thrown at them. This is unacceptable, period.
