Today I listened to a few Republicans defend Murdock's statement- as well as Murdock himself. I haven't given it full thought, because I was up late last night and so far today my mind is on other things. However, what I think I heard them say is that since the gift of life is God's blessing- even by rape- then a woman should not be allowed an abortion because the rape is an act of God.
Here's my concern or worry with this- and please tell me even though I'm in a half groggy state (but I do need to get this thought out of my thinking right now)- can't or won't a rapist get it in their head that perhaps they are doing a good thing for a woman? That they are giving her a blessing?
Could a rapist- especially a serial one who hasn't been caught- actually reckon that they are in some way doing or trying to do a good thing?
And another thing that gets me about these Republican's way of thinking- having the child. Sure, the child can grow up and prove to be a blessing- but the opposite can also happen- as well as the painful reminder of her experience every time she looks at the child- maybe you can say even moreso during the pregnancy. And can't a woman have a blessing if and when she wants a blessing? If you can't give a woman choice after she's been raped... you scare me.
And anyone wanting to get elected- Akin, Murdock, Ryan, Romney (not that he really has a stand on this, but he did choose Ryan)- this should be such a disqualifier, because it's part of their overall thinking. And the fact that Obama and the Dems haven't been able to convey this- or they just can't get through to people, because millions of Americans are possibly too stupid to understand- is troubling (to say the least).
In the last 13 days of this election what's needed is for some celebrity like George Clooney or Ben Affleck or Meryl Streep or Eva Longoria to do a long commercial explaining things to people. I'm not a celebrity fan, but i think it's come time for this. Obama and the Dems are doing a terrible job of explaining things. This election shouldn't even be close.
