It is well known at the gym that I am a liberal & extremely loyal to Obama. I don't go out of my way to irritate the Republicans I work out with, but I do insist on not having Fox on more than one station. Based upon my experience the last several days, we must be doing something right.

I work out on the same piece of equipment for an hour each morning. It is at the end of the row & the regulars usually find their way over for a chat about how the kids are, how the family is, any vacation news, etc. I have my headphones on & usually watching the ESPN channel that is on the television directly in front of me.

As I said, I don't go out of my way to antagonize anyone, but I refuse to back down about my views. Tuesday morning, it started.

One of the regulars asked how I was, & still excited about the debate I stated really happy (although sad about the Raven's loss, which is another topic altogether). He said why, & I said that Obama won big time. Roh was on like Donkey Kong.

I was treated to a verbal tongue lashing about how wrong I was, how Romney won, & will win in November. I was having none of it. Obviously reinforcements were called for. So another gentleman chimed in about how bad Obama has been the last four years.

That was it. I went on about who got us into this mess, who started the bailouts, & exactly what was so awful about GM thriving & Bin Ladin dying? Of course all I got was gas prices, & well not much else.

They left, but one came back to try & convince me that food prices going up was all Obama's fault. Luckily a friendly liberal was now working out with me, & we both just laughed at him.

Today, another gentleman felt the need to school me on how Obama is a Czar, Communist, Socialist. Yep, originally from Russia he felt that I had no idea just how horrible the President is. When he called me a check book liberal I totally lost it, & told him that he had no idea who I was, what I did to make people's lives better, & added a few curse words to send him on his way.

After fuming about this all day, I broke into a smile. They would not be so angry unless they were afraid that they lost the election Sunday.

Now if only the Raven's defense would strike such fear in our remaining games!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

and have to say that if anyone gets started with me..... I'm not afraid to finish anything.  Anyone gets in my way with this rethug/rmoney batshit brained lunacy will be treated to any number of choice words that will be heard from my mouth.  This acceptance of bullying by the rethugs has stopped with me.

There's even a ban on political discussions at my Mother's house, and a few of my friends houses as well.  They know.....

interview with that young girl who asked about pay equity for women at the town hall debate. She is an undecided Independent voter, whose parents are strong Conservatives, and in 2008, she said she voted for John McCain. However, she was harrassed and grossly insulted by the right wing crazies, led by Michelle Malkin who tweeted a really insulting comment about her. She said her facebook page went crazy with their insults.
She still says she is undecided, does she even realize that these are the very people who want Romney to win this election, so they can continue to bully people, and feel with their guy as Preisdent, it will give them more power to do just that.
I have to commend her for still trying to remain fair.

I had the audacity to add some support President Obama memes on MY FACEBOOK page. I was appalled at the so called friends who tore into me!! THEY have republican garbadge on their pages! Ive NEVER commented to them...I just place mine on my own page. I have lost or rather blocked those people because of their constant bullying!  2 of these people are family. These repubs are batshit crazy, narrow thinking people who will not fact check, or listen to a Liberal attempt to discuss Pres Obama. They get furious if you refute some of Romney' s many lies. I posted Steve Benen's " Chronicling of the Mandacity of Mitt' which Rachel Maddow has run on her blog. These people attacked me because it was Rachel Maddow who they hate with a passion! They refuse to even condider Romney has lied. Either that, or they know he has lied but their hatred for Obama completely surpasses any reality of facts.

And it's quite frustrating because it's said in this "oh bless his heart" tone that attacks my intelligence more than my political leanings. The thing is, a.) I'm not an idiot by any means (I have an MA and a JD, both of which I worked very hard to obtain) and b.) I never, EVER rub my political commentary in their faces. I'm way too nice.

(Fair warning: This goes on for longer than I'd intended, but it's very cathartic because I live in a very red area)

One of my best friends is now with a girl who, when watching a few minutes of President Clinton's remarks at the DNC, would furiously yell at the television such profound remarks as "I DON'T WANT TO STAND IN THE BREAD LINES!" and "UGHH, SHUT UP YOU COMMUNIST!" Mind you, just hours before this speech, she and my friend had gone to see "2016: Obama's America" and felt it was a fine piece of truth.

She also felt the need to jump on my case because I did not agree, as she did, that Michelle Obama "looked like a monkey". In fact, it infuriated her when I said she looked nothing like a monkey at all.

A few weeks ago, I had to sit with the two of them and the girl's parents as they continuously laughed about the "Obamaphone" video. When I explained to them that the very notion of an "Obamaphone" was false, with evidence and the actual history of the program at my disposal, I was dismissed as a biased tool of the Democrats. This, as well as the widespread "You aren't entitled to what I've earned" and "You buy iPhones, beer, tattoos and flat screen TVs with welfare/food stamps" memes, make my blood boil for a variety of reasons.

See, I did lots of work in law school for a legal aid clinic in St. Petersburg, and I provided counsel to numerous people struggling with everything from social security appeals, food stamps, Section 8 housing and various other homeless advocacy issues. I know about Safelink. I know about EBT and how it can and can't be used. When I see the disgusting stereotypes tossed around, gleefully at that, it makes me quite angry. When I calmly and politely use FACTS to thoroughly dismantle their racist and ignorant talking points, only to be dismissed with such replies as " HAS to be more than that, it's just too convenient to not be Obama's doing", I just want to give up completely.

The latest incident came when I was asked if I found Michelle Obama to be attractive. Why this girl has an obsession with the First Lady, I have no idea. When I said that I did, her expression soured instantly. "But her LIPS!", she exclaimed. This went on for about an hour, until finally she tried to corner me and demanded that I sum up my liberal position in three answers. "I want to know WHY you vote that way. Give me three reasons!"

At this point I should have told her to f--k off, but again, I'm way too polite. When I kept telling her I couldnt narrow it down to three soundbytes, that it's beyond complicated to do that to encompass years of thought and learning, while being cornered, she got pissed (I very well could have, but I knew it wouldn't end well and didn't want to go down that road). I started telling her that social issues are very important to me, even if there are some that by their very nature shouldnt be (for instance, i think we have a LOT more pressing issues to cover than gay marriage - since I firmly believe it's an open and shut case and a fundamental right of equality - but since the GOP is declaring war on that matter and dragging their knuckles in the sand as per usual, it's still a huge deal).

She thought she trapped me in a "gotcha" moment. A parrot friend of hers, also a GOP honk, then butts in with the golden line - "Social problems take care of themselves. It's a waste of time to try and prove otherwise." My reply: "Yeah, I guess we shouldve ignored slavery, suffrage, voting rights, etc...that shit wouldve resolved itself in time, right?"

Needless to say, they weren't too happy with that retort. All of this because I dared to say I didn't find Michelle ugly. Then, just as they saw a car drive by with a Romney sticker, the primary antagonist bellows "I like him for more reasons now but if I were back in college, I'd vote for them just because of Paul Ryan. Mmm MMM!"

I hear the same crap day after day. China is going to call us on our debt and cripple us. Iran is going to get the nuke. We're going to stand in the bread lines. Obama is dismantling the military. If the GOP were better with social issues, they would never lose an election. The "War On Women" is a lie. Clinton's surplus was due to the dotcom boom and a GOP Congress. Only criminals take issue with mandatory drug testing for welfare. It's enough to make my head spin and want to leave the planet.

Then I wake up and remember that I live in Florida, the same state that "elected" the criminal known as Rick Scott. I just need a job in a nice, safe blue state, perhaps :)

Thanks for letting me ramble. tl;dr.

Because when I asked them how exactly they are worse off than 4 years ago I get no answer. When I ask for one example of why they are voting for Romney I get a patronizing response that he is a great businessman. It is the same tone they use when I explain that social issues drive me especially reproductive rights. If I get really fed up I end up asking them why they feel the need to shrink government so small that it fits in my uterus. They back off me then!

You are right.  They are willfully misguided and wrong.   I respect your ability to stand your ground in the face of the right wing wind machine.

I wish that I had some words to give you that would make them see.  I don't.   But even though I don't know you, I feel your pain and wish you the best in your efforts.

We must never give up.  We must embrace the truth, for that and the ballot box are our only weapons.

  •  You can always educate but there are some places (0+ / 0-)

you have to consider if it is worth it. And that's when the person you are talking to has the power to hurt your career in some way. These mostly authoritarian assholes take disagreements as personal insults and will go out of their way to harm you in any (hopefully nonviolent) way they can.

I'd tip you but they cut off my tip box. The TSA would put Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad on the no-fly list.
