Somehow, I expected that some fundies would find a way to claim Hurricane Sandy was some sort of divine retribution. But would you believe they'd do it while people are still in harm's way from this monster? Well, that's exactly what happened this weekend.
You may remember Janet Jenkins, the Vermont woman whose partner, Lisa Miller, went fundie, eventually linking up with Thomas Road Baptist Church--Jerry Falwell's former church. She repeatedly flouted numerous court orders giving Jenkins visitation rights. Finally, a judge gave sole custody to Jenkins. Miller responded by fleeing to Nicaragua with Isabella; neither have been heard from since. This summer, Kenneth Miller (no relation to Lisa), a Mennonite pastor in the Shenandoah Valley, was convicted in a Vermont federal court for helping Lisa Miller escape. The next day, Jenkins filed a civil RICO suit against Lisa Miller. Also named as defendants were Kenneth Miller and several others who reportedly helped Lisa Miller flee.
On Saturday, one of the defendants, Linda Wall--whom Jenkins' suit accuses of helping solicit donations to Lisa Miller after she fled to Nicaragua--touched off a firestorm with a post she made in a Facebook group supporting Lisa Miller. According to People for the American Way, Wall said, "Let's see how Vermont does during the hurricane." Several of the group's members from Vermont instantly realized what Wall meant--Wall was hoping God would use Sandy to punish Vermont for daring to make Kenneth Miller answer for his role in this crime. And they weren't at all happy, with one of them objecting to "imprecatory prayer that God will smite my neighbors and me because of where we live" rather than praying for the powers that be in Vermont to side with Lisa Miller rather than Jenkins.
Wall's response was to double down. Big time.
I didn't expect most of you to agree with my statement. But I tell you this the tragedy here is that a little six year old Christian girl and her born again Mother had to flee America in order to obey God's Word.
And now a Minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ is facing imprisonment for helping protect a little child from being removed from her biological Christian Mother and turned over to a stranger.
Christians who loved and nurtured Lisa and Isabella through the six plus years are also being sued for obeying God's Word. So look in the mirror and decide where your commitment is.
Vengeance is God's and He does repay.
Absolutely disgusting--even by fundie standards. But then again, this is coming from someone who attends a church whose late pastor thought 9-11 was divine retribution for abortion and gay rights gaining a foothold.
