If you really want to see how the Republicans will run the country, take a look at Mitt Romney's "disaster" relief rally. Declared by Romney to not be a campaign rally, it had all of the trappings of a typical Republican response to any kind of crisis: An event designed to benefit those at the top by making a few followers feel good about themselves while not actually accomplishing anything.
When I thought about the rally, I wondered about a few things. The first thing I wondered about the rally was what disaster it was providing relief for. Being in Ohio, it was too far away to actually provide much help to those in need. Then my question was answered when they played the music from the campaign and the campaign video. It was Romney's disaster. It was being held in Ohio for one reason: To change the headlines from "Romney wants Detroit to go bankrupt" to "Romney collects food for Sandy victims." It was a straight up campaign rally, no matter what Romney said.
(For the record, I think that if he wanted to have a campaign rally, he's allowed to have one, and we're allowed to criticize him for having one and lying about it. I also don't like using the term "politicizing" as a way of putting down what politicians have to do when they are running for office/governing. It's what they do, and what our constitution has designed for them to do. As my government teach said: Politics is about deciding who gets what, when, and how.)
The second thing I wondered about was if Romney has paid attention to anything, at all, other than his money. The Red Cross, and most relief organizations, have let it be known for years that collecting canned goods or used clothing makes their job tougher. Personnel have to be used to sort through everything and distribute it. It's much better to give them money and let them decide where it should be spent.
But collecting cans wasn't about helping those affected by Sandy (did anyone collect can openers, and how are they going to eat canned ravioli without power to heat it up?). It was about making a few "Christians" (as compared to real Christians) feel good about themselves (Matthew 6:1-4: When you give to the poor, don’t blow a loud horn....I can assure you that they already have their reward.). These people will go home, thinking they have done something wonderful, when their entire purpose was to show off. And this is how they will run the country. It's not about taking care of the poor, the sick, the young, or the elderly. It's about showing off. It's about holding onto their money because of the real god they worship.
Finally, it was about Mitt. A disaster was going on, and where was Romney: Talking about Mitt. It wasn't about the hurricane and the people affected by it. It wasn't about people losing their lives, or losing power, or cities and homes flooding. It was about Mitt Romney, with the accompanying video and music. And if he's elected, for four years, it will have to be about Mitt, because he doesn't deal with the problems of the real world: Instead, he talks about Mitt.
