Will someone please explain to me this Benghazi thing. I know that Fox is still bringing it up for their nefarious reasons, but I don't completely understand Benghazi.

I know the obvious: the accusations are that the WH didn't want to call it a terrorist act, since that would make them look weak- not having the terrorist problem under control. (As if GW had the terrorist problem under control and Fox and the GOP never had to criticize GW for that.)

I understand the lack of security issue, but wasn't a UN building destroyed in Iraq and several UN workers were killed as well as the chief diplomat? And lack of security is not good, but it's not like Obama sits their running the State Dept. himself 24 hours a day. I believe he has some other President-ing to do. Etc.

Am I imagining this or is their more outrage from Fox and the GOP over 4 dead in Benghazi than there ever was for over 4000 dead in Iraq- or even for the intelligence lapses that resulted in 9/11?

I would appreciate if someone could bring up a convincing point in this Benghazi issue- or let me know if this is anything more than feigned outrage. Thanks.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

needs some dirt on the President, and this is the best they have.....if I flip on Hannity or Greta, they are always on this issue, every day. Literally devoting almost their whole hour to this issue, even as Sandy raged.

They think the President did not have quick enough response to the attack....and seem to think he could have saved the 4 dead americans.

the embassy in Tripoli with the consulate in Benghazi. They've also dragged in multiple "experts" that have made wildly false claims about the situation. It's 99.99% bullshit and 0.01% chicken shit.

Every time Romney and Republicans mention Benghazi it proves they are the sort of opportunists that would mine for gold in a graveyard.

I got an email from someone (conservative) who just jumped in by saying that Obama betrayed these men—no explanation of what was meant. I emailed back to ask "Huh?"

What is their theory of how they could have been saved?

My wingnut friends are frothing at the mouth about it - but not in a way that is coherent enough to be countered.   From what my closest wingnut seems to believe - they think he watched those people die real time on video and did nothing to stop it and then went dancing.  It's part of the sekrit muslin conspiracy that proves he's not really Amurricun and is going to destroy our government and install Sharia law.

Basically a judgment call by the administration that they might have done differently (I said "might") had they had a crystal ball.  Nonetheless, every foreign policy pro (including Condi) refuses to criticize the decisions being made in real time.  So the wingers think that they can leverage this tragedy into a victory on Nov. 6.  No one else cares.

is that you have to be able to explain it,

and whenever I have seen some troll explain it, I can't follow the argument.

But I have seen a certain concern about this issue from the the concerned caucus.

But other than that, now the Troll community is jumping on every liberal and newspaper site on FB spamming about Libya....

which I am sure will get people to vote their way.   Yeah.

crackpots, financed in part by Pamela Geller.
That caused a stir in the mideast on 911.
Romney very strangely jumped on it very early, and doubled down the next day, even after we knew American personnel had been killed.
It seemed as if he was reading from a script that had been prepared in advance. It was an attempt to turn Obama's greatest strength into a liability, in classic Rove fashion.

That was a major screw-up. It highlighted the fact that Romney was not qualified to be commander in chief.
It was a really unprecedented attempt to exploit the tragedy for personal gain.

After that, Karl Rove constructed a narrative of a White House "cover-up" in order to distract the news cycle away from Romney's screw up. Fox News, Darrel Issa, P. King, and the other usual suspects joined in the clamor.
The pliant mainstream media bent over backwards to assist.
They're still trying to gain some traction, because they're desperate, but it's too late.

    End of story.

The President's immediate handling of Hurricane Sandy is driving them crazy.  They were calling it "Obama's Katrina" even before it hit landfall.  Hoping, hoping, hoping.

Benghazi 24/7 beats listening to Chris Christie (their former hero & savior) talking about his new great working relationship w/ Barack Obama, how attentive & brilliant Obama is & how he's accelerated help for NJ.

    They simply cannot stand it.

  •  Honestly (5+ / 0-)

I've been trying to find out the same thing. If they were saying it was about the video and it wasn't about the video....who cares? How does this affect anything? What are they supposedly trying to cover up? I don't see any gain in it for O. Cover ups are usually meant to hide something, I honestly haven't been able to figure out what it is here.

Since my book is titled: "Is America Stupid?" I've been sensitive about being stupid about this. And for the record, I am stupid about a lot of things. But I don't get this. I, too, have wanted to use the phrase "who cares" but I didn't want it to be misconstrued in the sense about the 4 who died.  Just simply in the sense of "terrorists" or "the film"- either way it's bad, but what could Obama have done.

This seems to be their final, in a long list of "Is this the best ya got?" accusations they've hit Obama with these last 2 years especially.

the rightwing's entry-point to a whole host of risible criticisms of the President and the Administration. Between Romney's premature statements, Issa's hamfisted "hearings" and Obama's pwning of Romney during debate #2 they made themselves look like complete morans. I've tried to understand their outrage, I really have, but I don't understand what they think happened.  Looking at it in the worst possible light, even if they watched it happen and decided not to send in troops, I don't understand what the issue is.  Sometimes the military makes a decision that a rescue mission would do more harm than good (Iranian hostage situation anyone?)  In addition, they keep acting like the mob being a terrorist attack and being caused by the video are mutually exclusive.  Couldn't it be a terrorist attack that was partially started because of anger over the video?  We'll find all of this out in due course but as the Obama administration knows, it's best to leave comments until after the election when the investigation is complete because anything they say will just be used as political football and it's not what the country needs.

    •  What really gets me (0+ / 0-)

is that a lot of them seem genuinely perplexed as to why most Americans would be preoccupied with other things, especially right now, than some murky supposed scandal about what went down in Libya over a month ago.  Or why people would be impressed with Obama's performance as an actual competent president overseeing an actual competent FEMA.  Don't they understand?!?  LIBYA!!  um, some PLACE WE NEVER HEARD OF BEFORE ALL THIS AND WOULDN'T CARE OTHERWISE!! DEAD AMERICANS! because the hurricane hasn't caused any of those, and the rescue effort now isn't, like, making a difference as to whether there'll be more or how many.

on their front page, last I looked (yesterday).

Admittedly when I did a word search I found some topics with people being human at least to their own (one woman stuck in NJ), even some sentiments to the effect of let Christie do his job; but seriously.  You'd have thought there was no hurricane.  But, Libya Libya Libya.   Oh, not anything about the actual Libyans, of course; we don't care about that. Just holding up Ambassador Stevens as some kind of martyr to their cause.  It's surreal.

Someone on Facebook was whining because Facebook removed a conspiracy page. I posted Condoleezza Rice's comments and she came back insisting she had heard too much about it to believe that. I told her to stop watching Fox News and she got bitchy so I unfriended her and reported her post to Facebook. I've been through hell the last couple of months and my new philosophy on Facebook is I'm not putting up with any right-wing crap any more. Even my wingnut brother is actually refraining from that garbage.
