NEW! "The President is Distant and Aloof and I Can PROVE it!"
I tell you the President is distant and aloof---and so's his distant and aloof running mate!!!

CHEERS to Mitt Romney! Friday's jobs report was a bit better than expected, and the unemployment rate, while still not where we need it to be, remains under 8 percent. And for the first time I can remember, Mitt Romney is reacting decently and honorably to the news:
"I'm Mitt Romney, and I think I
just approved this bumper sticker."
"People of America recognize that the slowdown in jobs that occurred during the early years of the administration were the result of a perfect storm. And an effort by one candidate to somehow say, 'Oh, this recession and the slowdown in jobs was the result of somehow this president magically being elected,' people in America just dismiss that as being poppycock.
Every indication is that the economic policies adopted and pursued by this president are creating jobs. And so the people of America have to ask: do you want to stay with the president who is rebuilding the economy, who is creating jobs, or do you want to stop in mid-stream and find someone new?"
I hope he includes that in his concession speech. It's darn near poetry.
CHEERS and JEERS to pumping and grinding. To coin a phrase: "The cleanup continues." Here are some headlines from the weekend, with links to a couple notable dKos diaries:
Disaster exacts toll on older New Yorkers
Dangling crane secured
Over 1,000 NY Marathoners Running Supplies to Staten Island
New Jersey can vote by email or fax
Warming shelters opened
Occupy Wall Street Leading Massive Volunteer-Powered Recovery Efforts
Port Elizabeth terminal re-opening
Motorists line up to buy gas
Schools to reopen Monday
Oh, and one more headline if you're in the mood to add some tears to your Wheaties:
Sandy-battered East Coast braces for cold new storm. Nor'easter, they say. Thursday or thereabouts. But they'll definitely have the giant anti-ravages-of-nature dome finished by then, right? Uhhhh…
right?
Crucial swing state.
CHEERS to surrogate
in action inaction. While former President Bill Clinton barnstorms the swing states to huge crowds and wild enthusiasm on behalf of President Obama, former President George W. Bush was in the Cayman Islands doing
[redacted]. But now that I think about it, Hoover didn’t stump for Alf Landon. Nixon didn’t stump for Ford. And Bush II didn’t stump for McCain, either. In fact, former Republican presidents don’t seem to do a lot of stumping for their successor candidates, do they? I wonder why. Must be a rugged individualism thing. Or a restraining order.
CHEERS to a fine set of numbers. Fresh polling out of my beloved and at times infuriating state of Maine over the weekend, and you won't find any surprises. Here are the latest from the Portland Press Herald and PPP:
Portland Press Herald (Live calls)
Obama 49% Romney 42%
Senate race: Angus King (I) 50%, Charlie Summers (R) 36%, Cynthia Dill (D) 12%
Marriage license ballot question: Yes 55% No 42%
Public Policy Polling (Automated calls)
Obama 55% Romney 42%
Senate race: Angus King (I) 50%, Charlie Summers (R) 33%, Cynthia Dill (D) 11%
Marriage license ballot question: Yes 52% No 44%
Average 'em together and it's Obama by 10 (landslide!!!), C&J reader King by 13 (landslide!!!) and gay marriage approval by…let's see: 10.5 percent average minus five points for the Bradley Effect equals…5.5 (we'll take it!!!) But only if you vote, so, y'know…do that.
Vader will soon appear as the kindly butler with the
mysterious past in Disney's "Beverly Hills Chihuahua 4."
CHEERS to a new lease on life in a galaxy far far away. By now you've heard that the
Star Wars franchise has been sold
by George Lucas to Disney for a cool $4 billion in Imperial Credits. If they're smart they'll let the Lucasfilm elves keep doing what they're doing, since they've got this movie/gaming business down pretty pat. Personally, I've been a
Star Wars movie geek since I saw the original in a Berlin theatre in 1977 (and lemme tell ya, Darth Vader sounds a lot more menacing in German). So I'm looking forward to… Oh wow, hang on, I've just been handed Page 1 of the script for remake of
The Empire Strikes Back. Let's take a look:
I'm your father aaaafter all,
I'm your father aaaafter all,
I'm your father aaaafter all,
I'm your fa fa fa fa ther!

CHEERS to the new President-elect of the United States.
Hey, pundits! Whose resume is thin
now?
-
And just one more…
CHEERS to O-tunes. As the campaign season staggers for one more day to its inevitable conclusion (and remember the Mourdock Rule: when Obama wins it's "God's will"), an anthem has emerged as a sequel to 2008's Will.i.am viral smash Yes We Can. And it's got it all: popular stars, Obama clips, lots of Whoa-oh Ooh Yeah's, and crowds of people running out into the street in fired-up-ready-to-go harmony. And damn if it doesn't work. Enjoy:
The Romney team tried to make a similar one, but Victoria Jackson and Meat Loaf were perpetually off-key, and their crowds kept stopping to ask each other, "Who's our guy, again? Newt?" (Actually, Mitt. But Newt in 2016 sounds good to us!)
Have a merry Monday. Tomorrow we shail into hishtory! Floor's open...What are you cheering and jeering about today?

Today's Shameless C&J Testimonial:
“I have no idea what standard people are using to declare Obama’s first term a failure. To save us from a Great Depression, rescue the auto industry, re-regulate Wall Street, decimate al Qaeda, kill bin Laden and Qaddafi and provide universal Cheers and Jeers? That’s failure?"
