Hawaii has the worst record for voter turnout. Lahaina has the worst record in Hawaii.
My wife and I hopped on our 115 miles to the gallon scooters to vote at the Civic Center. It's the only polling place in West Maui. In past elections you could hear crickets chirping and the staff is half asleep. Not today.
The first tip off that today was different was at the left turn light to get to the Civic Center. Vehicles were backed up so far that it was going to take at least three lights to get off the highway. Being on scooters, we cheated by hooking a U-turn and going in the back way by the fire department.
We got inside and luckily saw there was no line at the S-Z sign in table. W showed our IDs (this has been in place for over ten years so it's not some GOoPer deal) and got in line to fill out our ballots.
There's usually about ten booths. Not today. There must have been forty booths set up and they were setting up ten more.
We waited over ten minutes for empty booths. The ballot was the longest I've ever seen here.
After filling out our ballots we had to wait another five minutes in the line for the ballot scanner.
It was a great day to see such a large turnout. The only bummer was we didn't get I Voted stickers.
