The press cannot disclose actual election results until after 8pm PST.  What they are releasing for Florida seems to be a violation of Federal law about skewing results in western states.  What is the story?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Western Florida panhandle (0+ / 0-)

is in the Central Time Zone. So polls in FL don't close until later this evening.

That was part of the mess in Bush vs. Gore. The media didn't realize that the Panhandle was in a different time zone from the rest of the state, and they called the election over for the state while there was still an hour to vote in the Panhandle. A lot of people who were still going to vote heard that it was over and Florida had gone for Gore (so they said in the first announcement). The news spread to the people in line from the latecomers, including some of my friends, and most of the people still in line left at that point, thinking their votes didn't matter any more.

The town I lived in was the county seat. There was a huge protest at the courthouse with people from all over who had left without voting and realized their votes could have made a difference. They said an estimated 10,000 people in the entire Panhandle didn't bother to cast their votes. So the media's ignorance could have made the difference in the results that year. But for some reason, although this was all over the local news, I never heard it covered on the national news.

Chantedor does a good job of explaining it.  I recall this also happening on the west coast.  As I noted before it like a spoiler alert problem where some gives away the score in advance of a tape delayed sporting event like the last Olympics.  It pisses people off and upsets the local bookmakers.  More importantly, people get discouraged and believe there would be no point in voting.

Is there a law?  Who knows, but maybe there should be!

  •  MSNBC just showed Florida (0+ / 0-)

at 4:22pm pst. with 11% IN

    Obama(50%) 491,343

    Romney(49%) 480,687.

They didn't announce it just showed it over on side of screen.

how the law works. First of all: there is no law, networks can PROJECT whatever they want to, but do not do so until the polls close in a given state, by choice. Second: they can give ACTUAL results as they are available on a state by state basis -- they do not have to wait for the west coast, but they VOLUNTARILY refrain from announcing the winner of the election until 8pm PST.

So, if you can comprehend that, I answered the question.

I can't believe our election is being decided by people who can't tell the difference between republicans and democrats...that's like letting a dog choose what color to paint your house.
