The Daily Bucket is a place where we post and exchange our observations about what is happening in the natural world in our neighborhood. Each note about the bugs, buds, and birds around us is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns of nature that are quietly unwinding around us. |
Today, the daily bucket is about ends. Yes, the 2012 campaign cycle brought some careers to abrupt ends. The outcome for President Obama was what we wanted, however. I am very happy with that. Ends like that come as a great relief for many different reasons. In this daily bucket, the ends I want to discuss are on these logs.
Melanie and I were eager to get out for a walk today. We had been cooped up in the local OFA office since early Saturday until late Tuesday guiding the GOTV activities of our neighborhood team. Walks and relaxation were not in the cards. Today, we rounded the curve on the path and noticed these logs of 6-8" diameters piled up.
Here is side view of the same log pile. We thought they looked like the bark of a pine. We said simultaneously "foresterbob will be able to identify that wood." Many others will, too. It was an interesting sight with the dark centers. What causes that appearance?
A little more for you is below the squiggle.
It was a cool morning with a chilly breeze. We chose a path that took us through some sheltered woods to avoid the wind. Grasses are dried and tall in many places. These with delicate tops are a favorite. What are they?
There was an abundance of this dried plant. Some of you will immediately recognize it. If you don't, here is a hint from an earlier beautiful diary by Melanie.
Now it is your turn. What are you seeing in your backyard? Share your thoughts and observations with us. Where are located?
