Last month I posted NaNoWriMo, or Why You Really Need to Vote, wherein I explained that the success or failure of my attempt to reach 50,000 words at the end of National Novel Writing Month hinged on whether or not Obama was re-elected for a second term.

Well. Obama was re-elected. Now I have no excuse whatsoever.

Thanks to the Obama victory, I will not be forced to write a (hopefully) witty space opera featuring a cheerfully amoral smuggler and a two and a half meter hyperintelligent bug with a feeling of dread and despair looming over me. I will, instead, be forced to write a (hopefully) witty space opera featuring a cheerfully amoral smuggler and a two and a half meter hyperintelligent bug with a feeling of vexation and anxiety looming over me. I'm sure you can appreciate the difference.

So far I'm off to a good start. I've managed to hit the minimum recommended word count for each day of the month so far... except for one. For some reason--I can't explain it--I have a 1,667 word deficit recorded on November 6. It's a mystery that may never be fully explained.

Back to writing! Thank you Daily Kos for your assistance in this matter.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from Rescue?
Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?

so the election really had no role in my participation or completion of it.

The election cycle did slow it down some - I was doing some campaigning (in Oklahoma - the "reddest of the red" states - my, how our governor is proud of that!) that took me away from writing the first 4 days.  Election day itself, my office was converted into a polling place, so I ended up writing over 20,000 words that day in addition to photo-documenting the polling that took place right before my eyes.

May have had something to do with the fact I was working on a voting rights story. All the reports of lines, purges, and other such attempts to shift the voting electorate towards the Republican's favor just fueled the writing process.

I feel like a slacker.   But the election  really did eat into my time- plus a sinus infection.  But now, Election over, sinuses cleared up- fired up, ready to go.

I really couldn't help it.  I have 8873 words, which now puts me deep in deficit.  I was hoping to devote the day to writing, but phone ringing off the hook this morning blew that out of the water.

Trying to find a job while doing NaNo is really trying to do two things full time at once...

  •  I'm not sure where Caedy is in word count (0+ / 0-)

My other half was ahead by 800 two days ago. I think he's hit at least projected since then as he isn't complaining loudly about being behind.

Caedy I'm not sure. She's handwriting and then typing in because her netbook died. She's typing on a tablet with a keyboard that has very little battery life. So she writes in a notebook while she's going to and from work and on her break, and then typing it in at night, which of course is slowing her down. Then there's the fact that she's working most of the day (which is every year), and on her early schedule so having to be up at 3am, and thus falling asleep with her face planted either on the keys or on her nano notebook. But she's going to the meet up at the local library on Saturday afternoon, so hopefully she can get caught up then.

and some others are disturbingly far along. it would almost be disheartening if they weren't such awesome cheerleaders in the chatroom :)

      •  well my other half (0+ / 0-)

has CP and is legally blind. He doesn't type fast, and he can't find his registration code for Dragon to install it on this machine. So for him to be 800 words ahead is a huge deal. Me, I'm just verbose, as my college professors and DM's have discovered over the years ("oh, you want a character background?" Two weeks later: "Is 53 pages ok or do you want more?").

I have more trouble when you give me an upper limit.

  •  I always knew it was going to (0+ / 0-)

be unlikely that I would keep up with my word count during the week of election.  But this weekend, I pound it out.

  •  Word count. (0+ / 0-)

How I hate those two words right now.

My novel is okay.  It is coming along nicely, but SLOW AS HECK!

I'm currently at the library and getting ready to retreat to a corner and just write for a little while before I have to leave and go catch the bus home.

Will update my WC tomorrow morning after tonight's night of binge writing. Some people binge drink, I binge write during the month of November.  Will write until I pass out.  :)
