Itzl AlertingAs you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here.  We care!

If you'd like to be part of the Itzl Alert Network, please leave a comment asking to join, or send us a message asking to join. We'd love to have you. The bigger our network, the less likely someone will be stranded all alone.

Yesterday was spent at IzumiCon.  We did a table trade with them - gave them a table and 2 passes, then they gave us a table and 2 passes.

While there, the cold front hit really hard.  It's very, very cold outside.

That means - pecans!

Yes, yes, I can now harvest pecans.  That's a good thing because they cost a lot at the store. I will be spending my evenings cracking pecans and picking the meats out of the shells. I will freeze them in vacuum sealed bags so they stay fresh longer.

Winter is creeping in.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:

I don't allow myself too many luxuries, but pecans in my homemade granola is one of them.  They cost more than all the rest of the ingredients combined.  Still, it's worth it.  :-)

pecans come off the tree? or???

I'm only used to walnuts & filberts here in OR and neither of those harvests is temperature dependent. (I think).

We used to u-pick walnuts when we were kids, Mama's idea (depression-baby). We'd dry them over the floor register of the furnace, then crack & crack & crack. For YEARS she'd send a one-gallon glass jar (that had had pickles or mayo in restaurant-sized units in them. no idea where she got them but I'm sure hanging on tight to the 4-6 I've still got) of walnut meats to each of her sisters. One of them told her years later that she'd taken those jars for granted, until one year she tried filling one herself! 8-)

Ugh! So did not want to wake up this morning, and I think I need to change the song on my alarm clock.

Either way, heading out the door in about twenty minutes or so.  If I get to work early, kudos for me, if not oh well.

I was at the grocery yesterday and there were baggies full of shelled pecans that cost $12.99.!!!

Anyway, still here, after a night of creepy dreams, and I am not taking any meds that warn of disturbing dreams.

Awake and in a remarkably less amount of pain than I have been in days. I'm still tight across my back and shoulders, but it doesn't ache like it has. I'm not sure if that's the weather warming up, the 4 loads of laundry I folded gently stretching things out, or if I just found a really good position to sleep in. Wish I knew which one so I could repeat it if possible.

It's 61 currently with a high of 81. Very nice weather. I hope the cold front Noddy's dealing with doesn't come through here any time soon. Our forecast looks like maybe Wednesday or Thursday it'll cool off by 10 degrees or so, which isn't too bad.

Enjoy your pecans Noddy. I don't mind nuts mixed into things, but I never much liked them solo. I always tell people that's because I'm nuts enough ;).

We have our own pecan trees, and the pecans just fall off... so we pick them up when they do.

I'm safe in DC -- was a very long day yesterday.  We'll do the Smithsonian and mall museums today, then tomorrow it's Dad's burial at Arlington Cemetery.   Then home to Dallas, and the NEXT day a very early day of work.

I tell ya, I will be so glad for this week to end.

You want cold?  It was 70 degrees yesterday, and it's 30 now.  There's ice on my deck because it rained last night.
It's going up to 40 today, so that's not bad.

Going to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned.  Not my favorite thing, but it must be done.

    Have a great day.

I am a work in progress. Still.

the yard two summers ago.  I thought they did not make it, but this year there were baby trees coming up from the root stock we planted.  It will be a long time before we get pecans, the tall one was 11 inches this year!
