There will be a titanic struggle between Democrats and Republicans about the committee assignment of newly elected Elizabeth Warren. By virtue of Warren's proven advocacy for the middle class and her philosophical and academic background, she should receive an automatic assignment to the Senate Banking Committee, the obvious place where she could serve America best.

Will it happen? As much as logic and, hopefully the Democratic leadership, will put Warren on the Banking Committee, Republicans with their banking and Wall Street masters want to keep her off it. Republicans rightfully fear that Warren will pry their choke-hold off the middle class and make Wall Street malefactors accountable for their economic crimes (read: jail sentences).

The joker in the deck is how much and to what extent Democratic senators owe obeisance to Wall Street campaign money. The decision of Warren's committee assignment rests largely with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. Will he put Warren on the Banking Committee or the Committee of the Library? As always, judge our politicians on what they do (and how they vote), not on what they say. Watch and see what the Democrats and Harry Reid do.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

over their budget did not do it for kicks. The grassroots re-elected the President. We need to pressure the President, Vice-President, all congress critters to do what we want.

Not what we expect. What we want.

My favorites bar is expanding. I'll find out how to turn the url in sig to a link.

I'm waiting to see if Warren is invited to the meeting President Obama is holding. I've sent him and Senator Kerry emails. Phone call to Kerry tommorrow, tell him, then request a transfer to Reids' office.

  •  The GOP doesn't decide Democrats' assignments. (4+ / 0-)

The banks and other financial interests WILL, on the other hand, exert considerable pressure on Reid.

I'd rather see Senator Warren on the Finance Committee, where she can bring to excllent use her considerable intelligence, common sense and ability to describe seemingly complex issues simply.

Being on Banking - which, if Harry wants to stick it to Republicans, he can also do! - would use her strengths, but mire her down in partisan crap to only marginal benefit.

FORWARD to 2014: Win back the House. Build up the Senate.

to have get a berth on committee supervising native American affairs.

And not just to figuratively slap her snotty opponent for his bigoted behavior.   Growing up in Oklahoma would probably give her more background  on native issues than younguns in many other states get.

My native genes are same number of generations behind me. I credit them with some of my better instincts toward mother earth & fellow mankind.

If she applies her skills to the morass of anti - native behavior in our government,  we could all be less ashamed of our failure to even protect their basic human rights.

Until every voter counts, none do.

President Obama re-elected. The grassroots gave him a majority Senate. Now the grassroots collect. President Obama knows the entire country worked with money and time to get Warren elected.

He knows her worth. He knows that we want her to be on the Budget committee. President Obama must be frequently and forcefully reminded of what we want.

Not what we expect, what we WANT, DEMAND.

The grassroots are owed. Budget Committee is the most logical spot.

The pressure must be kept on.

  •  Ummm... (11+ / 0-)

Republicans have no say whatsoever on Warren's committee assignments.

If Reid wants to put her on the Banking Committee, she's on the committee... it's as simple as that.

    were:

    1. Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs
    2. Veterans’ Affairs
    3. Small Business
    4. Armed Services

I agree that Warren would be great in banking and want her there, but the defense contractors are already quaking in their pants and she has not even been sworn in.  I'd say that Armed Services is also a great place for Warren.

Then they came for me - and by that time there was nobody left to speak up.

but whither in common modern usage (especially in the construction “Whither X?”) almost always implies that someone has disappeared and the writer wonders where he or she has gone. So your headline reads as a criticism of Warren, as if she's gone silent or otherwise “missing” since her election.

Just saying, if people start hating on you who didn't read the diary text, that's probably why :-)

(But points for spelling whither correctly; you're way ahead of TPM there :-D )
