I work for an exciting place, good exciting most of the time, and frustrating at other times. I'd love to be able to share the cool things that happen here, but I can't talk about them.
There are any number of reasons I can't talk about my work except in the most general terms. None of those reasons are that I would lose my job over it.
While I've posted a few pictures of my desk and office and the grounds outside (my mushroom stories and pictures of Itzl and Xoco and the clouds), they've been "anonymized" so my workplace can't be easily recognized if you haven't been inside it in person.
I'm not even forbidden to talk about my work or where I work, so why can't I talk about it and the cool stuff that happens here?
The privacy of my co-workers and our clients is why.
I respect their need to approve and control access to information about them, even good information.
I don't talk much about my family and friends for much the same reason.
Privacy.
We have so many invasions of our privacy, unintentional as well as deliberate, that I have chosen to not share these things.
But it's hard to stick by my decision when such good things happen, funny ones, and happy ones that I want to share - because in sharing them, I have to share more than the good, funny, happy things, I have to reveal a bit more about the people than I feel comfortable revealing because they could be identified however I try to disguise them. And yes, I have done my best to anonymize them. In doing so, I lose the point of the story, the good stuff about it becomes bleh, and the funny stuff - it's not funny anymore. Taking hte person out, changing it so they can't be recognized just ruins it.
So, just so you know, even when I whine about the bad stuff here at work (which, oddly enough is easy to anonymize - bad stuff is bad regardless who does it, good stuff is intimately personal - go figure), there is a LOT of really cool stuff I can't share because of my decision to maintain other people's privacy.
What cool stuff I can share without violating my decision, I will happily share.
Just be aware that there's a whole lot more cool stuff you don't get to know about.
