If you haven't heard it yet, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's song "Same Love" was the unofficial anthem of the recent Referendum 74 campaign here in Washington State. It gets my vote for Song of the Year, as it was personally so defining to have Seattle rapper and producer pair up to create a heartfelt plea for civility and equality.
That's what makes it especially painful to hear about Susan Johnson, the performing arts teacher from South Lyon, MI, who was suspended without pay for playing the song to her class at the request of one of her students.
Lots of emotions on this one. Looks like the ACLU and others are looking into if there is any recourse for Johnson.
I'll keep it short. Play the song if you haven't heard it yet. And share it with anyone who will listen.
