The Southeast Missourian reported today that Republican Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson will retire from the House in February 2013 to become the head of a non-profit organization that represents rural utility cooperatives and public power districts.

The Huffington Post characterizes Emerson as a "moderate" Republican.   I would probably disagree seeing as to there are no such Republicans anymore.

The SE Missourian also notes this about Emerson's last election:

Emerson cruised to a large margin of victory in her last bid for re-election, taking over 70 percent of the vote against Democrat Jack Rushin and Libertarian Rick Vandeven. In August, the congresswoman defeated Bob Parker in the Republican primary. She hasn't faced a tough election since her first.
Nevertheless, Democrats should try to find a strong Democratic candidate for this part of Missouri.   Any win would take us closer to Nancy Pelosi getting her gavel back, and a 50 state strategy is very important for cases like this.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

special election they're going to have to run.  If I were a donor I'd be demanding my donation back from her war chest, since she must have had this in the works while she was asking for votes.

because of how anti-infrastructure spending the Republicans have proven themselves to be over the years.  Oh, they'll pay money to connected contractors, but actually improving service?  Not likely if it's going to cost even a dime.

I usually don't read the Front Page and so I checked my tags to see if there were other diaries written on it.

I would like to hear which Democrat should be in this race(even if it is a red seat, we should run somebody for it).

and it is next to impossible for a Democrat, or at least anybody that actually believes in the principles of the Democratic Party to prevail. However, the Carnahans of Missouri have deep roots in this rural district. Outgoing Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan and her brother, Russ Carnahan, an outgoing Congressman, have nothing better to do. Perhaps they can be lured into making a Kamikaze run.
