Itzl AlertingAs you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here.  We care!

If you'd like to be part of the Itzl Alert Network, please leave a comment asking to join, or send us a message asking to join. We'd love to have you. The bigger our network, the less likely someone will be stranded all alone.

It's supposed to be 10*F colder today than yesterday.

Still not quite cold enough for baking to be useful as an alternative heat source, but cool enough that baking won't drive us out of the house. This is good because Cookie Day is coming soon.

Cookie Day is one of the most important Numenist holidays, and it's coming up on the 12th. I need to get started in baking for it.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?

    Tuesday feels like Monday.

Don't wanna be up.  Don't wanna go to work.  Wish I could stay in bed and sleep for several dozen more hours.  Ugh!

    from here.   Hmmmmm....!

Jury duty this time is indeed an onerous duty.  I'm on a civil case that will last at least 8 days.  I can't say much now, of course, but may write a diary about it later.  Suffice it to say, justice is not easy to come by and can take a very long time.

Well,  it's supposed to be 56 degrees today.  Gloomy now.

I've got to go out today and buy some presents.  Time is slipping away.......

    Have a great day.

I am a work in progress. Still.

We had a good time out last night. Baby girl's tablet will be here between the 7 and the 12 they were sold out in the store. I got a Samsung Galaxy II 7 inch for 199. She was playing with the display in the store and can see everything on it fine. A 10 inch may have been better, but those were $400 give or take. Plus it's her first one, let's see how she does with this one first. She's looking forward to being able to read Kindle books without having to borrow mine. And we were window shopping free apps last night.
Draco got his computer replacement, so he's happy, and no longer perching like a Snoopy Vulture on the end of my bed when he wants to go online. Tonight once Caedy's home we'll jump onto Paypal and handle our donations we're making, and Saturday we do our warm glove shopping as well as my eye appointment.

Cookie Day sounds like lots of fun. We need to buy new cookie sheets before we can bake cookies though. Ours were second hand when we got them 6 years ago and not in great shape then. Florida humidity has rusted two out so they're beyond usable, even with tin foil. We have one we can use. Not conducive for mass cookie baking. Those are on our to be bought list for Saturday.

The 10 inch is good for drawing (includes a pen), but the 7 inch, frankly, is better for reading and games.  The 10 inch is really kinda big.

It's perfect for a sketchbook, which is what I'm using it for.  But I have a 7 inch one that I love, too.

10 inch Visual Land Prestige, but this one seems to have better graphics and a better touch screen. And with her vision I figure better quality visuals and contrast are probably a good thing. They didn't have a Prestige in the store to compare it to directly though. We did look at several different models though, and apart from the Ipads which are entirely out of my reach price wise, this seemed like the best one for her that also had the back camera she wanted (and I wanted so she isn't asking for a digital camera in two weeks as well).

They have some interesting tablets designed specifically for kids that I may have considered had she been younger, except I don't like gadgets that take the censoring policies onto themselves. I prefer to control content myself for my kids.

$50 (the cost of a dinner for the two of us at a nearby restaurant) will buy lunches for a week for all the elderly at the Senior Citizens Center in the poorest part of town.  When you're that kind of poor, every nickel counts.

They're so old.  They've worked so hard and they have nothing.  Lunches for Christmas is the least of what they really merit, but it's all I can do.
