Maybe I don't understand their website...I've never been before tonight.  Maybe I'm just not good at clicking on links.  But the NRA, as far as I can tell, has nothing on the Sandy Hook tragedy today on their website.

Here is the link to my search on "Sandy Hook" on www.nra.org.

http://home.nra.org/...

Please tell me they are not ignoring this.  I'd really like to think they might have something, anything to say.

Sorry for the short diary, but I am appalled, nay, sitting here, outragedinSF.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from Rescue?
Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?

The NRA hung up on the person after a smug "we have nothing to apologize for".

They have politicians in their back pocket.  And....NRA lobbyists are well paid to make sure it stays that way.  Politicians have been warned the NRA will see to it that they are primaried if they don't toe the mark.

We are the ones who are going to have to change this.  Pressure your representative.  Email & fax them.  Call their offices first thing this morning.

Demand that the assault weapons ban be reinstated.  Demand that your representative or Senator sponsor a bill to change this hideous unregulated industry including background checks for unlicensed, unregulated gun show sellers.

      What else ya got?

Yes, I'm sorry for the bitter reply, but really...on a larger scale, we need leadership on this and we need a hard fight.  I'm all for it.  Let's spend a little "political capital" and engage.  I'm tired of pretending it is OK for our current gun policy to remain.

I wanted to write a snark diary called :

      "600,000,000 automatic weapons"

calling for America to arm every man woman and child with two guns, in case one jammed when needed, but it is tasteless and not right and not snarky enough and the timing is wrong and the whole topic is just plain depressing.

just now, out of curiosity -- and found nothing at all about today's tragedy.  Not surprising.

I think the NRA will find themselves on the defensive in the wake of this tragedy, more than ever before.  Decent people are sickened at what happened.  And the fact that the shooter used firearms belonging to his mother and kept in the home, and killed her there first before driving her car to the school, this goes directly against the NRA's most basic claim that to keep such weapons in your home is to promote and enhance Americans' safety.

As tasteless as it is to discuss this not more than 24 hours later, and with a big shout out to weatherdude, I agree with you that this tragedy exactly contradicts the "safety" argument.  I am not in favor of banning ownership of any firearm.  I am in favor of banning automatic and semi-automatic weapons. Period.

They should at least say they express condolences. I heard they are reserving comment until facts are in about the crime. They probably want to know how the guns were procured and also whether the shooter was crazy.

Their news blog had a riveting post today urging readers to vote for Friends of NRA as the best show on the Outdoor Channel.  They're covering important stuff!

I clicked...and I clicked, and clicked some more.  And it was all politically slanted pro-gun propaganda.  It's just disheartening.

probably in focus with spin doctors and PR cooking up a CYA, "rah! rah! patriotism!" response. It may be a lot more difficult and taking longer than usual....
