Dear Congressman Gohmert:
I was appalled by your statements on the December 16, 2012 Fox News Sunday news show. This video was posted to your congressional web site. If you think that guns protect your freedom, think again. Semi-automatic weapons or high-capacity clips do not protect people from tyranny in our modern times. It is obvious you have no clue of the power of the Internet. In 1839, English writer Edward Bulwer-Lytton stated “the pen was mightier than the sword.” Recently, the Arab spring used communication technology to overthrow governments, not firepower.
You stated:
“I wish to god she had had an M-4 in her office, locked up so when she heard gunfire, she pulls it out and she didn’t have to lung heroically with nothing in her hands, but she takes him out, takes his head off before he can kill those precious kids.”
This quote is so far off the mark that it is misleading. It was already well known before Sunday morning the Principal was meeting with a parent, vice principal and school psychologist at the time the shooting started. Three left the room. Only one returned. More guns in society don’t make it safer, and only provides greater opportunities for aggressors to capture or steal weapons and wreck havoc.
Wake up, and realize you are on the wrong side of history. You have no idea of the facts of the situation, and should apologize for your right wing, gun-loving rhetoric that many believe is the cause of this systemic violence. Citizens in our modern society have no need for high-capacity clips or semi-automatic weapons that can be easily modified to be automatic. They are only safety blankets for the paranoid, delusional, or extremists.
