Now I have just found out that there has been another mass shooting. In Webster New York, two fireman were killed and two injured by some guy who set the fire so he could take shots at them. That is right set the fire to trap the firemen.

How many has this been, Malls, movie theaters, schools, christmas shopper, now firemen.

These are just the ones that get coverage, how many neighborhood have to deal with drive by shooting and gang violence.

It does not take a great sage to figure that something is deeply wrong here. Something has gone deeply perverse in our society. I guess I am not a good blogger because I cannot claim to have or offer any answers.

I am not writing this to advocate for gun control. The reason is that many have done this and can marshall the facts and write it far more eloquently. It is not probable that this diary sure could add much to this debate that has not already been said.

This  diary is not written to advocate for stronger mental health systems. Again for the same reason, others have done it better.

In these two regards, I doubt that I could be much more than an amen chorus.

The reason for this diary is to say that we really need some sort of a compassion revolution. It is really clear that people are slipping through the cracks and we are now paying the price. The technology of destruction gets greater every year unfortunately, moral and spiritually we are not keeping up.

If only vague cliches have been offered, it is because I am indeed at a loss. When I was young I seemed to have more answers. Now I have more questions than answers these days. So all that can be can said is something with each of us and society at large must change.

Maybe it could something as simple as listening. I read somewhere a few years ago that the number one complaint that people outside the US have about Amercians is that we do not know how to listen. I can see the point. Mostly during my day most people kind of talk at each other as opposed to each other. It is ironic in this age of communications revolutions that very little is actually being said.

I know that these are trite solutions but, I am at a loss all I can say is something within our society and us needs to change.

Maybe on this Christmas night there are others with more wisdon than I. Please share it.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Somebody has to do something, and it's just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us.

I appreciate your humility as well.

There are no easy answers, like you stated.  Certainly if we had comprehensive heath care that included addressing mental health issues, that would greatly help.

More good paying jobs would also help.  And when those are not available, a solid safety net for the unemployed that includes training would be a great investment.

Ending the culture of violence perpetrated by the US on multiple foreign countries would show the citizenry that peace and understanding is not just a viable option, but the best option, until it is proven beyond a reasonable doubt that it won't work.  Then sanctions and international pressure on that country until it is proven beyond a reasonable doubt that won't work.  That is probably a diary in itself.

Invest heavily in our public schools.  Each school in this country should be a castle.  Stop the zero sum game of having to choose between teaching reading, math, and science in lieu of music, art, and athletics.  I wish that the Pentagon would have to have bake sales to fund the B-1 bomber, more drones, more bullets and bombs, but Public Education got whatever they asked for.  Those who oppose funding on education would be smeared as being "soft on education".

Restoring the rule of law.  Stop the "too big to jail".  Prosecute torturers and war criminals.  When people see that the elites are subject to the same laws as the "unwashed masses", then it would demonstrate a sense of fair play that may prevent folks from taking matters into their own hands.

As far as guns, there is a rule for that.

There are four boxes in the defense of liberty; the soap box, the ballot box, the jury box, then the ammo box.  USE THEM IN THAT ORDER!

The problem with the teabagging gun nuts is they go strait to the ammo box, skipping the other peaceful steps, including things like the Occupy Movement.   How many times does it have to be demonstrated that peaceful protests work, so that fourth box is never necessary?

I don't claim that if all of this was done it would completely solve the problem, but I do think it would whittle it down quite a bit.

Thank you once again for writing this.

Call your representative and senators and the white house (lack of capitalization intended) to STOP this crazy warmongering with Iran, please.

I ended up having to work today so, sorry I could not respond sooner.

When I ready your response I was ready to call the fire department myself because you were on fire.
I love the some of your quotes.

Each school should be a castleStop too big to jail
The stuff with the four boxes.

These were absolute political poety in my high disregarded opinion.

BTW: I am not sure if Indins Bob is just a nickname or refers to where you are. I am hoosier once removed. My mom is from Fort Wayne and my dad is from Goshen.

  •  Mental health is extremely imoprtant, thanks for (0+ / 0-)

the diary.  Yet mentally ill people would not kill so may if we had sensible gun regulations so it is difficult to separate the two (except for the absolutists that always seek the refuge of mental illness to avoid any talk about regulations on their sacred guns).

Then they came for me - and by that time there was nobody left to speak up.
